Thank you. What do you think of the price? A new one on sale is $1249 at Best Buy

When the Nikon was first released, several reviewers mentioned having to try more than one copy to get a truly sharp one. Unless you have the option to return the used lens after inspection, that might be a consideration for buying new.

Is the Nikkor over priced?

I would strongly suggest Nikon you cannot beat their products

I have found that some Nikkor lenses retain higher market value than others. Sometimes there is a logical reason for it, sometimes not. As an example, I recently bought a very nice 24-120mm f/4 VRII lens for $425. In the same display case was a 16-80mm f/2.8-f/4 DX zoom for just short of $900. Those two lenses have quite similar initial purchase prices. Their reputations are quite different, as is supply. Lots of 14-24mm f/2.8 lenses can be found for sale used at pretty high prices, but they don't really seem to sell at those prices...the market is just too flooded by folks who thought they needed one, then found out that they didn't.

In the case of the 200-500, the initial purchase price represents quite a good bargain. It is not a premium lens, but it does a very nice job and represents an excellent value for the price. I've not seen very many for sale...most folks who buy them seem to keep them. That all affects resale pricing.

I've had my 200-500 for a little over two years. My circumstances at present don't let me get to locations where I use it a lot, but I'd not consider selling it. The biggest issue, in my opinion, is that it is not provided with a suitable case...just a simple dust bag. Folks have found various solutions for that. I happened to find a Tamron case intended for one of their 400mm zooms at my local camera store. It's a little bit of a tight fit, but works OK.

You do not say what camera you plan to use this lens on. Be aware that it uses the new "E" electronic diaphragm. Make sure it is compatible with your camera. You can do that by consulting NikonUSA's website. Even if it is compatible, your camera might need a firmware update for it to work.

I don't believe you'll go wrong with either lens but here are a couple examples from the Tamron G2.

I didn't know anything about the fit comparability. I want to use it on D7000.

I use Tamron and have not had problems with it. I have no problem with Nikkor I also have their lens. I am a warranty person. Why buy a 6 year old lens with a 90 day warranty. When you can get a new lens with a six year warranty for $50 more.

Can you test the Nikkor?
Before spending much on a used lens, I would want to see how it worked.

Yes, I am going to do that. I have not decided if I am going for the used one. If I buy one it will be a Nikkor, but I have not made up my mind if used or new

Ignore this reply. I thought you were referring to the Tamron lens. I tried to delete the reply to no avail.

Please point out these reviewers, I have not seen that in any of the reviews I have seen. I would like to see them too.
