So, how do you turn the internet "off." Do you unplug the Ethernet cable?

If you get your internet through a cable, that's one way to turn it off.

If you get your internet through wifi, your computer will have a setting that allows you to disable the internet. All computers are different, so check the manual. It is not always possible (or advisable) to turn off the wifi.

You should never rely on the cloud for your primary backup. Not because it's inherently unsafe: cloud backup is probably an order of magnitude or maybe several orders safer than your 2 separate backup drives. The primary problem is bandwidth. It will take a long time to restore a lot if files if it becomes necessary.

You should rely on your 2 (or 3 or more) separate backup drives for your primary backup. If you have a problem they are there for you and the restore speed is as fast as it can get. You should rely on a cloud backup service as your secondary backup system. Your 2 drives are in your house. If there is a disaster involving your house, those drives will be lost. If you put a third drive somewhere away from your house, it could be lost in a regional disaster (less frequent, but not unheard of). A cloud backup is maintained by professionals, as opposed to your separate drives, which are maintained by an amateur. The cloud backup is widely distributed, probably across countries if not continents, so a regional disaster will not affect it.

Local storage for backup. Cloud storage for backup backup.

Naturally, it all depends on the value you place on your files (ALL your files, not just your photos).

I am annoyed with Microsoft apps that do not allow deletion (such as X box game). Also what is with the myriad of "microsoft visuals" that multiply like rabbits? If I can manage to delete the early ones, will it screw up the rest of the system?

For the last 2 days "occasionaly" I've been trying to weed out the junk "Dell" put into my computer and little by little I'm getting there. I wish there was a list that I could go down one by one and kill everything not needed. I'm doing all this because my overall aim is to setup my desktop system only for imaging including video and it will all be copyrighted. Also, I do not keep a connection "on" to the internet unless I send a file or download something I want. So here recently I've been thinking about going ahead and getting Lightroom/Photoshop because the Windows picture file system/disk burner system sucks, and I'd rather have editor that I'm familiar wth even tho my last one was Photoshop 7 on a Mac. So I "guess" my connection has to be on all the time for Photoshop. So a couple of questions; Does anyone here use a VPN and which one, and secondly I don't want any "Cloud Sh** to automatically take place and I'd rather run extras drives so if you have any preferences there I'd appreciate it. Btw, the OneDrive system in Windows is automatic I guess cause I don't remember signing up for it, and I don't want any of that. I would appreciate any hints you have to help me realize my goal, thanks.

If you want to disconnect from the internet and still post process, go with PSE. It is a purchased app and can work independently from the cloud, so no internet connection needed. The way PSE has advanced, it is almost as powerful as PS CC. Perhaps the only drawback is that updates are not automatically provided but, do they come out that frequently and are they really all that special. From what I read and hear, the updates are infrequent and only slight improvements. Plus, with PSE there is no monthly payments adding up to around $120 a year minimum. PSE costs around $100 and one app culd do for several years unless a really special advancement or update comes along and that may be every couple years of morw, so still a significant savings.

It is called bloatware and is easy to uninstall; easier to do before you load it up with other software and data. It is also easy to order a computer with only the operating system installed.

You can turn one drive off in settings and also remove UT in the uninstall area of windows 10.

I use Tunnel Bear VPN on both my Windows PC's and on my iPhone. I like it. Simple to use. Basically ON or OFF. If desired you can select to tunnel into other countries, but it's easiest to leave the connection set to "fastest". I think I can detect a slight delay in internet traffic (since you are basically doubling the traffic using it...packet from PC through tunnel, packet from tunnel to destination URL, packet back from URL to tunnel, packet back to PC.) This would be true on any VPN...due to laws of physics.

I use Dropbox for sharing and for iPhone photo uploads.
