On our walk to the Hanseatic Museum we passed by a familiar sight (first photo). The Hanseatic Museum is located in two old trading houses with exhibits illustrating how merchants traded stockfish and grain. The photos show what life was like in Bryggen, circa the 13th – 15th centuries.
The Hanseatic League was a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in Northwestern and Central Europe. Growing from a few North German towns in the late 1100s, the league came to dominate Baltic maritime trade for three centuries along the coasts of Northern Europe. Hansa territories stretched from the Baltic to the North Sea and inland during the Late Middle Ages, and diminished slowly after 1450. The league was founded in 1358 and ceased operations in 1862.
The next part will showcase the city of Bergen from Mt. Fløien.
What a way to live! Quite an eyeful from the simple table to the enclosed bunk beds and a form of a skylight. The photos invite us to imagine living in those times. Great set, Dennis.
Great photos and nice narrative Dennis.

Thank you for your comments pixelmaven. Note the pewter in the second photo; it was partially made of lead and resulted in lead poisoning. The enclosed bunk beds helped stave off the cold in the winter.

Oh how nice! Lead poisoning no less. Glad we don't do that any more.:o(
Nice, colorful photos. That model boat hanging in number 2 looks interesting.

Thank you NMGal. I was a little surprised to see it, but much of their economy involved fishing, so it makes sense.
Excellent set of very interesting subjects.
Excellent set of photos. Love the skylight photo and all the handcrafted lumber in these old houses.

Thank you Blair. I'm glad you enjoyed my photos. More to come today of this beautiful city.
I'd live there just to smell the place.
