Hi guys I am looking at getting a canon 50mm prime lens but I don't know if I should get the f1.8 at £99 or pay the extra and get the f1.4 at £240
Your thoughts please
Joe.
If you have the money, buy the 1.4
Much higher build quality.
I agree. The 1.4 has a metal mount for a start, while the 1.8 is plastic.
Hi, Go to the local camera store, ask to mount each lens to your camera, and take some photos. Take a shot of a white paper with crosshairs drawn on it, look at how sharp the lines are. Maybe the store will allow a 30 day test period, or less.

If you get the f1.8, you'll look at it and say "wish I'ld have gotten the f1.4".
If you get the f1.4, you'll look at it and say "wish I'ld have gotten the f1.2L".
I'm depressed, got the f1.2L and no place else to go.

aperture wise there is very little difference between the two. I have the
f/1.8 and it's sharp, fast and accurate and I always recommend it. It's an inexpensive lens but very good... I use it often. Below are three that I shot yesterday with this lens... my grand children all in available in home window light.
Mikaela. t1i, 50mm f/1.8, 1/50, ISO 100, hand held.
Skyler. t1i, 50mm f/1.8, 1/50, ISO 100, hand held.
Robert age 1-month. t1i, 50mm f/1.8, 1/200, ISO 400, hand held, some editing with Fast Stone

Interesting. I just checked out ken Rockwell. He prefers the 1.8 0ver the 1.4 because of better focusing.
Perhaps he doesn't hear we'll. this lens is so noisie it can be embarrassing to use in a quiet public setting! Maybe it is just my lens bit if you can swing it go with the 1.4 the 1.8 gets great pictures.

If it's depressing you that much send it to me, I am still saving up to buy one, could have a holiday with my savings
NIkon guy here so not sure about Canon. At the middle stops (f/5.6 f/6.3) The Nikon 1.8 is sharper than the 1.4. It is harder to get sharp with fast glass. It filmdays the 2/3 stop meant something but not with digitel. I would check on this before you buy. - Dave
The 1.8 is as sharp as or better than the 1.4. The 1.4 is built better, will have a higher resale value, and manual focuses easier/more ergonomicaly. The 1.4 will also AF better in lower light.
Suggest comparing images between the two. You may be surprised.
Yep, the f1.4 is a better lens and well worth the difference in price.

Do you need the extra light that bad? Or just push one stop and save 140 for your next lens. Ron
I do not own any Canon gear, (Nikon only, right now) but a friend of mine does (5D mkII) and he has both the 50mm f/1.4 and the 50mm f/1.8 and swears that the f/1.8 is a little sharper than the f/1.4 True or not I can't tell as my eyes aren't that sharp anymore. :P :-P
WOW people never expected such a massive response. Can I start by saying thank you. I like the idea of the 30 day trial but I only have 3 camera shops by me and they are big retailers so doubt they would allow this. I am looking to get a 50mm lens for portrait work so sharpness is probably the key ( someone please correct me if I'm wrong ) and a couple of you have said the f1.8 appears to look sharper and can focus quicker Which would be good with pet portraits. Aarrggg still confused
