Traveler is right - so many benefits in camera clubs - when I bought my first SLR used from a friend he sold it to me on 2 conditions #1 I use it for a while to determine if I realty would like & use it and #2 join a camera club with him to learn how to use it better.
Best advice I ever have been given - 8 yrs of meeting, contests with pro judges, field trips - the list goes on & on.
Great friendships that last forever.
The "Meet Up" that are now popular are also great - I belong to one - Nature & events photographers of Sacramento,CA

I am chairman of a camera club in the UK. I joined 5 years ago and have learnt so much from fellow members and even now when I forget as much as I have learnt over the years there is always someone willing to show me how to put things right. We have competitions for Novices and Advanced members. We have point and shoot photographers to the must have the latest gadget photographers. The age range is from 14 to 75. We have lectures from guest photographers, workshops and practical evenings using models and set up arrangements for macro etc. Best of all we have over 50 members and I reguard them as friends and the social side of the club is just as important.. Google for your nearest club you may be nicely surprised and don't be put uoff by other photographers photographs - it is all in the eye of the beholder and what you enjoy.

My suggestion would be to go as a guest / visitor a time or two. If you think it holds promise, and the dues are reasonable ($20 annually at my one here), I'd say join. If after a year, it didn't meet your expectations, then simply don't renew. Yet chances are you'll want to continue.

I would be interested on hearing from people who have been in a Photographic Club.
What are the benefits of being a member?
I don't consider myself a "geek" in photography I just enjoy it without getting too over loaded with the technical stuff and who has got what equipment.
I also looked at the local club's website and the photographs they are showing are amazingly good. I feel a little overwhemled by that.
Any comments good or bad would give me an idea before I commit.

I find being a member of a camera club keeps me learning and improving. Our club has been in existance for 6 years, I was one of the founding members and can't tell you how much I've learned. We meet once a month, hae field trips, both day trips and overnights, have great speakers, workshops and I find friends who enjoy the same hobby. I will never be an Ansel Adams but it's fun trying.
