Take the road to McDonald's Observatory. About 11 to 1 a.m. About 1 mile below the observatory there is a safe pull off. It's a great location for the Milky Way and stars in general. Marfa lights late at night…they're real. The Prada Store - ask someone… daytime shoot on the way to Valentine.

An interesting town. You can do the triangle, From Marfa to Ft. Davis to Alpine and back to Marfa again. The towns are about 25 miles apart and all are interesting. Alpine has something going on almost all of the time, and is home to Sul Ross University, a beautiful campus. Enjoy and take water on your trips, you'll probably be getting out of the car and shooting quite a bit!

I didn't catch your home location, but if you are not familiar with the southwest it can be something of a shocker. As noted above, there are indeed vast distances to be covered. The landscape is not only be beautiful in a desolate sort of way, it can kill you if you are unaware of your situation and location. Take the comment about carrying water very seriously. Also a first aid kit and some sort of blanket, since in that country it can be very hot during the day and quite cool, even cold, at night. We Texans are very proud of our state, but we know its oddities should be respected as well as enjoyed. Have a great trip and do publish your images!

If you are, by any chance, staying at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, you're in for a real treat. An amazing place. History, wildlife, birds, and scenery. Great accommodations. Take every lens you have. Seriously, wide angle and telephoto.

Take a drive to Marathon. Check out the Gage Hotel. There is some beautifully preserved Texas history there. If you are there around the time of the new moon the night sky is awesome.

I do.

Not sure I am copying others as I have never seen what's there

Hope you have a better day.

At least you’ll know where not to go - nothing wrong with that!

No trip to Marfa is complete with a stop at the El Paisano Hotel, where the cast of the movie Giant stayed. Lunch outside on the patio and have one of the best burgers I've ever had. The architecture, inside and out, is def. worth photographing. A word of caution, however. Don't stay there. The mattresses were awful.

Doubt if they still have one James Dean slept on, though. Was a while ago.

If you are staying at Cibolo Creek Ranch be sure to take the mountain tour. An interesting drive is the Pinto Canyon Road, FM 2810 from Marfa to Ruidosa. From Ruidosa you go to Presidio then north back toward towards Marfa. Starting at Marfa gives the best views. First part paved then gravel to Ruidosa. It says high clearance vehicle but that means don't try it in a Ferrari. Toyota 4 runner no problem.

Very good info Steve. Paisanao, if I recall, is named after the Piasano pass which If I recall, in Spanish, means 'My Countryman'. The story I remember back over 35 years ago, is that:
Back in the 'OOOOOOLLLLLLLDDDDDD DAYS', the early Spanish explorers back the 1500's when they first began to follow behind Columbus. I cannot recall the explorers name, but you would recognize his name. They ship wrecked off the South Texas coast. The surviving crew were scattered in a new and unknown strange land.
One of the men met the natives and they did not kill and eat him. However, they befriended him and helped him. Now what I recall is that he wanted to find his way to Mexico where there was an established Spanish fort or settlement. So, the natives dedicated themselves to help him. As the story or legend goes, was he and his native entourage were going through this area, he ran into one of his fellow ship mates who must have been adapted by the local natives. It was such a joyous and wonderful reunion, the natives with them dedicated this pass area in their heritage. This is why we know it today as Piasano Pass. Now, the two Spaniards did make it to the Mexican outpost and did make it back home in Spain. So the story goes. There is A LOT and I mean A LOT of history in this area from the ancient natives upward. As far as the Marfa Lights ? well they have been know since history has been known, the natives saw and knew of them. One legend is that they are the spirits of Native Chiefs looking for their people and tribes. I hope the OP reads this and spends some really good time there experiencing this magical and wonderful place we have here. Yes it is remote. And oh hell yea, its summer in Texas. It does get hot, WATER AND MORE WATER and do not run out of Gas and do not head out into the wilderness alone. I remember so many stories of this area. He will have a wonderful time there. Thank you for the input Steve.
Your neighbor, Bruce.

Here is a photo of a Mound in Big Bend near Marfa. Lots of landscape and vegetation. Witch out for the bears. /var/folders/n4/03xsnnk50cs9c8x54k8clmqc0000gn/T/com.apple.iChat/Messages/Transfers/IMG_2785.jpeg
