I did both last year but spent a whole day in Sedona and the rest of the whole week in GC. Although the Pink Jeep tour we did was really nice, doing that in Sedona and then making the trek to GC, you'll spend more time riding in a vehicle than you will be enjoying the sights. Keep in mind the tours are always 2-3 hours all in and the time from Sedona to GC is some 2 hours. Given only one day, how much will you really enjoy the sights?

In the GC, Paul is right, Go near the Angel Bright Lodge, the sights on that side of the south rim are amazing. The weather is a factor, so is the smoke from any nearby brush fires burning. I have shots with this cool haze on them, albeit it looks foggy, it is the low lying smoke from the fires that were burning.

We also did a Helicopter ride https://www.papillon.com/?ref=0000 It was just unbelievable. again, 3 hours.

If you have the time and want to do something really special again another 1-2 hour ride, take a photo tour of the slot canyons. They have tours that are limited to photographers, and you must have a DSLR or Mirrorless with tripod to go on it. One photog will enable your family or loved ones to also go. This keeps out the cell phone snappers and they unreal with helping set up shots and taking you places others are not allowed to go. Unfortunately it appears they've closed due to the virus, who knows if they'll be open when you get there. Worth a call. https://www.navajoantelopecanyon.com/Photo.html

In any event, the other thing you might take advantage of is the dark sky in the GC to do some Milky Way shots at night. In short its an all day affair, from day break to after dark.

Be really careful about where you are, some are killed falling over the edge trying to get that best selfie. There's no hand rails to keep you confined. When we were there, the news reported that someone had just done this. I happened to see a Ranger giving a class about the history of the canyon and asked him how many people actually do that. We learned that 6-7 people a year go over edge from loss of situational awareness (selfies). They said another 5-7 jump and another 10-12 have the big cardiac arrest. Bring tons of water, get a hydro pack if you're going to do some hiking. Although my wife teased me, I filled mine with Lemonade and tons of ice and was able to go all day. She had boring lukewarm water. I took a picture of my dash to memorize the fact that in August 2019 it was 111 degrees when we got there.

In short, there is so much to do there you will not realize how fast the time went. It's been a year and I still haven't processed my pictures, I have so many that SOOC look amazing. Go on youtube and look for videos about the Grand Canyon, there are some real good personal ones among the silly ones. I'd go back in a heartbeat as I don't think we saw everything. I'd like to go to the North Rim in the fall for some snow and more winter scenes.

There are no longer ANY dedicated photo tours to either Lower or Upper Antelope Canyon. They have been stopped permanently for months now. Now you just take your camera (no tripods allowed) on the regular tours and make all your shots handheld, which is not a problem with modern cameras or modern cellphones. Photo tours were clogging up the canyons with time consuming stops for individual shooters to set up tripods for some staged shots. It was costing the tribes time and money. I have done both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon on the regular tours and made great shots handheld with my mirrorless Sony A9 (Upper) and Sony A7RIV (Lower) and a single lens, my Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 lens.

If you go, all the Upper Antelope Canyon Navajo tour providers are great. For Lower Antelope Canyon I recommend Ken's tours, the original Lower Antelope canyon Navajo tour outfit. IMHO they are still the best with the best guides. https://www.lowerantelope.com/ i got great shots in both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon, but liked Lower Antelope Canyon a bit better for variety of shots. Both are stunning and if you have the time do both.

The slot canyons are closed until August 16th due to the covid19. Yes you will want to book a tour in advance always, and especially now as the months of pent up desire for these tours may cause a real demand after August 16 .

We did the South rim of the Grand Canyon early in the morning (great as the early sun comes over the rims) both near the main overlooks and also at the Desert View lookout (not to be missed for great Colorado River and Painted Desert views) . Then we drove to page, Arizona and did Antelope Canyon. You can easily do both in the same day, or do the Grand Canyon in the morning and do Horseshoe Bend, also near Page, Arizona. (but Horseshoe bend requires a total hike of 1 1/2 miles, in and out, so it is more exhausting and time consuming and the mostly unfenced rim is not for the faint of heart.)

We did Sedona the day before the Grand Canyon and all the suggestions here by folks here I endorse . I would treat yourself and have a great lunch and some great photo views at the Enchantment Resort and Spa. we didnt stay there (too expensive), although a friend of mine and her boyfriend did , but the public is welcome to have a great lunch at their excellent indoor/outdoor restaurant that comes with amazing rock views. we walked around the resort after lunch and got other great photo views. https://www.enchantmentresort.com/?utm_source=GoogleMyBusiness&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=GMB&utm_term=ench

cheers and enjoy

There is only one place worldwide that you can get a UNIQUE photo. Nowhere else in the world has NON golden arches at McDonalds other than Sedona. When McDonalds applied to build in Sedona, the city politicians said the Golden Arches were too gauche for their site requirements. Hence the building are a reddish sandstone and the Arches are turquoise.

This is the only truly unique image you can come home with from the Red Rock countrly. I have enjoyed many trips to Flagstaff, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Jerome (built on stilts), Prescott, Camp Verde and other communities.

One day to see GC and Sedona.... Total Effing waste of time. Find two weeks in your schedule and hunker down near Sedona, and many others. Just going for one day......at least get a picture of the Turquoise Arches or leave your camera home.

Too busy at this stage of my life. Can only do a quick in and out trip. Maybe when I retire...

Honestly, trying to do this in one day is a waste of time, dollars, and resources. You are better off going to Disneysomeplace, and going to Sedona, GC, Flagstaff, Jerome, Oak Creek Canyon, and Page when you have at least 3-5days. If you are only going to do it once, do it the right way if you want to truly experience one of the best geological formations in the US.

In late August, I will have one day to spend at the GC. Where and at what times are recommended for photography?
And, while I'm asking, any recommendations for Sedona would be great.

Thank you

Go to the South Rim, be ready to shoot no earlier that 2 hours before sunset.(Known as the Golden Hour because that's when there is Buttes really stand out, otherwise the canyon is all washed out. Also, two hours after sunrise until about 10 AM. Hopefully, The monsoons will still be around and you will get some dramatic clouds over the canyon to incorporate in the scene. Go out the Desert view road for many pull offs to get different angles of your images.

When driving to the Grand Canyon, take the turn off to the right going to Desert View. This road will take you by several turn outs where you will have different views of the Canyon to photograph. The final destination will be desert view. There you will see the tower and another view of the Canyon. The best time to start photographing are the hours of late afternoon as the shadows till accentuate the buttes in the Canyon. I live only a two hour drive from the Canyon and have been there many times to photograph it's beauty. Best wishes and good luck.

Too late. Trip already taken. Best if replying to active threads instead of older ones
