When I retired from the Army in 1980 after 28 yrs. I applied for auto insurance from GEICO. I had never had an accident and had not had a traffic ticket since 1955. They told me I did not qualify for their insurance. I have not talked to them since.

Allstate has provided three small refunds in April, May and June.
I filled the VW's fuel tank in March, it now shows just above half

It depends on the state, county and local ruling politicians.
Here in Lalaland, we have independence in insurance companies and policies.
Legal minimums can be less than $30/month, decent coverage for $50. Scammers need lawyers.
My wife doesn't get tickets-AAA is very nice to her. Lost her day job, less drivers and miles = 24% decrease.
I have a kid in Pennsylvania, one in Georgia. Screwed first, last- and lucky if any coverage is covered.
My brother took over a dead relative's house in Jersey. Worse than Pennsylvania. Get what you're told.

Allstate has been sending monthly rebate checks since April. Didn’t bother to work out the percentage, though.

USAA reduced my six month premium by a little over $20. The next six months is costing me $326 for 6 months for a 2006 Mazda Miata, liability only

Hah! GEICO, 1980.
I was working in aerospace, I had a Goldwing, my wife had a Suburban, Sequoia trip that summer.
Talked to our longtime agent in his office, about trip/vacation coverage, Suburban and accessories.
He'll get back to us. Two days later he calls. We go in. He has a report ...
BIKERS ARE EVIL!! You rasterds have been getting away with coverage on a commercial truck at commuter car rates!! Those parks are dangerous!! Customs (FM radio and a GM rear floor pad?) are illegal!! You're lucky we just don't cancel you!! Your rates are way going up, buddy!!
El wife- appalled, getting angry. Me? Angry- getting hysterical. I "steal" the report, we leave.
Farmers Ins just down the street. HOT female agent. Reads the report, hears the story.
Smiles. Offers us: pay 80% of Geico's original costs, get same coverages, raises life insurance policy.
Stayed with them for eight years until we moved.
Geico wouldn't back down and lost a lot of good customers over that policy.

I’m sure that’s the case. I don’t know what there revenue so far this year is, but in ‘19, it was $9.9 Billion, for the second year in a row. Their net income ratio for the two years averaged around 6%. I can only presume they’re not exactly suffering.

We know someone well who works for All State. If you knew the bonuses these guys/gals get it would make you furious. Our auto insurance is still high with no claims or tickets in over 40 years.

I am no fan of insurance companies having been roundly screwed by an Allstate rep on a life insurance policy that I only learned after being too old to fix the problem, but I will have to say that Blue Cross Medicare Plus healthcare is excellent, at least here in NC. They have increased benefits and (believe it or not) lowered premiums the last two years. Their copays are low (and they have dropped them to zero during the pandemic) and their customer service line answers calls with an English speaking rep in less than 30 seconds.

My other compliment is to USAA if you’re eligible. Their claim process is absolutely seamless and ultra customer friendly. Low premiums may seem fine right up to the moment when you have a claim, and that is when you can tell what an insurance company is all about.

I checked with ALLstate a while back. Their rates were somewhat higher than most other insurers I checked with and I pointed that out. The agent said I would be money ahead of their competitors prices in the long run by keeping a clean driving record. Ho hum, they all tell ya that. Then he brought up the added savings to be had by combining vehicle insurance with property damage insurance. They all like to push that too. That must make up a good part of their profit margin??

After 30 years with Allstate and 8 separate policies, they started raising my homeowner’s insurance (that I had never had a claim on) by 50% over two years. The explanation? That the home was now 50 years old and somehow was less insurable even after receiving proof of many tens of thousands of $ in updates including roof, hardiplank, electrical, plumbing, etc. Then they doubled my life insurance premium on what was supposed to be a whole life policy. When confronted with questions, they suggested I lower the amount to keep the premium the same. It took a complaint to our state insurance commissioner to find out what the agent wouldn’t tell me - that it was a “universal life” policy instead of the whole life that had been sold to me 30 years ago. Since it is impossible to prove what the agent told me, no choice but to pay the premium (which has increased more than 100% over the last few years) until I either die or cannot afford to pay the premium, costing my heirs 150K$. Last week I got a notice on my 2nd policy which IS a whole life policy, that the value is dropping because the “cost of insurance is increasing”. It will be interesting to see if it’s legal to change the premium on a whole life policy and begin to decrease the cash value by raising the “cost of insurance”. I intend to find out. Of course the real truth is that at my age, they are facing a large pay out soon, and they want to get me to drop the policy if possible. That is the kind of company that we’re discussing - do you really want those kind of surprises in your retirement after 30+ years with a company? I moved everything except the life policies to USAA.
