My new computer is based on a MSI Gaming Plus Max MOBO. This model has accommodations for "Mystic Light" color control and the cooling fans also have RGB lighting. All is beautiful.

Consider, we in photography work with Red, Blue, and Green mixed ... By adding colored lights inside the computer case we have our colors traveling at the speed of light, so logically our editing of photos will be much faster than if we did not have lights within our computers. Say what! NO, not reality!!

The cost of this computer upgrade was relatively low. Each component ordered in May of 2020 had been demoted by new editions, thus what I paid was for retired... clear the shelf components. Old saved components from my acting-funky computer were the case and Nvidia 1050Ti graphics card. All else was new and at cut prices. The modular power supply was an exception.. no price drop.

By way of example, DDR5 will be coming out this year so DDR4 is being dumped at bargain prices. My CPU is an AMD RYZEN 5 3600 new edition is 3600X... better NO not in a practical sense. My memory is DDR4 3200 32mbytes.

The C:\ hard drive is a digital M.2. The M.2 drives attach directly to the MOBO architecture and so are much faster than even the 2.5-inch solid-state drives. [wow-faster than the old 5200 and 7200 rpm mechanicals] The m.2 was cloned from my mechanical drive I kept my W-10 and all programs. Lightening speed, fast boot.

I am amazed at how fast the computer boots and runs. The 3600 Ryzen 5 CPU is not dual, not quad, rather it is 6 core. The Ryzen comes unlocked. Intel is in trouble on more than just the Ryzen lower price they are beaten in performance. The Ryzen is made to be abused and even the DDR4 can be overclocked!!! MSI has included a program to control the color in the case.. that is what the MYSTIC COLOR is.

Computers are a part of our image processing system just as lens and cameras are. Building your own computer is amazingly easy, many online videos will show you how step by step. Go for it!

Yes, you and I have been there and done that.. as the saying goes, but many are new to the thought of building their own.. they will miss the fun and challenge if the buy an off the shelf. Also, DIY gives more control of the component choice.

It's gotta be the lights inside that make that really scream during processing.

I still like doing it.
Sometimes it's like a basic easy challenge. "Look what I can do!"
And a lot of "new" computers are like buying "new" cars from shady car dealers.
"OH! You want the alloys and whitewalls? You don't like the AM radio and the rickety seat? That costs extra."
You want one like the demo. Car or computer. A lot of folk just go home with a basic "stripper" model.

Why I like old MacPros. Minimal ram, slow CPUs, POS video, wanky 500gb 5400 rpm drives. CHEAP!
You were EXPECTED to hie your hiney to the Genius bar with a gold card and a smile. Many didn't.
This is another 4,1 > 5,1. Upgrade to the second best 6core CPU (half price), 3x8gb ram, SSD and 2x 2tb HDDs and a 550ti It's within 90% of the 10 year newer trashcan Mac. Windows just flies.
I was given a Win7 system. Did we talk about this on this forum? A few years back a vendor still had access to a Win7 volume license- so everything got it- unless you paid $200 extra for Win10. She didn't. So:
4 slots with 2x2gb stcks, added 2x4gb. A 2tb HDD replaced the 5400 750gb, which was kept. Looked up the mobo, and an old 2.8 4core xeon replaced her 1.8 dualcore. Bill Gates upgraded it to Win8.1 for free.
Blew out the dust and debris, cleaned the case, gave it back. Kid's "old" PC about as good as mom's "new".

Your new computer is fast. And pretty. You're proud of it. And rightly so. You are future proofing.
I can't foresee you running into any performance problems for the next 5 years. Probably a lot more.
And every time you sit down and boot up, you'll smile. A little self satisfaction. No worries.
How much is THAT worth?

I have been assembling my own since the Intel 386 CPU - good fun! Just like Christmas with boxes of carefully chosen components arriving daily and then the fun day of assembly. With modern cases, drives just slip in, and it’s just a matter of screwing in the power supply, MB and cabling. The only laborious task is installing the OS and all the aps and any configuration of those. And like the OP, I use a number of the old machine’s components.

My son has just built a high-performance computer. The case is about twice the size of a normal one with one side being glass. He named off everything that's in it, but the only thing that caught my attention was the $1800+ price tag and that doesn't include the monitor.

The Watcher said in part: "My son has just built a high-performance computer. ... the only thing that caught my attention was the $1800+ price tag ... "

Spread that over the years it will last and the cost per year is not so "poked in the eye" striking. If it is for gaming, then it is an entertainment justified expense. Altho, gaming was warned attached in Startreck Next Generation 106 the whole crew was addicted to "The Game." Gaming is not a learning tool.

I paid a lot [$1200] for a computer in the early 90s and got a contract doing Super-Fund Cleanup tracking in Texas. The return on investment was two weeks. Fast computers were slow back then, I would start a compilation of data, go get coffee while the hourglass rotated ... chat a little and then go back and print out the data. A simple statement, Computers can be a money-making tool.

While M.2 is the size of a stick of chewing gum the chewing gum will not work.
Good video on how M.2 work vs solid-state drive:

Yes, TriX, it is for you Christmas in July with the parts arriving and like when we were kids putting and playing with new toys... so much fun and there needs to be neat placks for our computers saying "Built By."

When we were into cars, it was whatya got under the hood, now it is what is in your computer case.

TriX, for my computer, the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is about $150 [includes cooler], the MSI Gaming Plus Max B450 about $100, 16 Gig of DDR4 3200 about $140, Powersupply 650 W about $80, M.2 1Tbyte $100. Existing Case, Keyboard, Monitor $0. Total cost without RGB lights [$18] and Colored Fans [3/$20] about $600.

This computer is better than one Newegg had on sale for $1200
