. . . for the rocket scientist and math geniuses among us.

I was reminded of this last evening at dinner. My bride prepared chef salads for us, with of course slices of my home grown dermaters, and on the side were three halves of her delish deviled eggs. Let's see, that would be an egg and a half, hence this short little poser.

This goes waaaaaaay back to my childhood. One of my brothers-in-law used to play tricks on me when I was an older pre-teen, and this one always stumped me, even though I was sorta good in math stuff.

If a hen and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how long does it take to get a dozen eggs?

I won’t reveal the answer, so you will all have tussel over your specific answers. Let ‘er rip!!!

An additional requirement for all responders, please include your status as either “Rocket Scientist” or “Math Genius.” I just want to know who I’m dealing with here. 😎😎😎

12 days assuming you count 2 half eggs as one egg. If you want a dozen whole eggs and don't count the halves, it will be 18 days.

Twelve days. A hen and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half. Which equates to a hen laying an egg a day. So, 12 days for a dozen eggs.

I know of no half chickens, except the one which may be on my dinner plate this evening...

So what the heck. Why assume it's a fictitious number (obviously used as an average only)?

The answer should be 12/C, rounded up, where C=#chickens one actually has.

2 chickens would take 6 days, 8 chickens 2 days.

If you're in a real hurry, go to the store assuming you don't already have them in the 'frig....

Sorry Ken, I must disqualify you also, for lack of compliance with rules. You utterly failed to denote your quals as either RS or MG! However, due to the fact that you provided an alternative for a quick supply, I will allow you to be considered for secondary awards, if any surface.

Actually I'm neither... just a plain old chemist who affects both of those disciplines.

I wasn't in it for the $$ anyway. ;-)

Sorry to disappoint Ken, but the prize, if any, will likely be something like an abused egg carton with remnants of egg shells stuck to the little pockets.

. . . for the rocket scientist and math geniuses a... (show quote)

Neither Rocket scientist or math genius. I use to do puzzles in my younger days.

I am going to say. 11 days. If you start at 1pm on day one with one and half eggs, you should get to 12 at 1 am on day 11. Of course since it is now 1am that could be considered the next day so it could be day 12.

Sorry Dave, that “let’s go with RS” sounds a bit equivocal to me. I need a stronger statement to get you back in the race for the used and abused egg cartons.

Jill, I firmly believe that it will take either an RS or an MG to be competitive in this race. Can you fudge a tad on your quals, like, did you at some point in your younger days, dream of going to the moon, hence an RS, or maybe solving a Rubic’s Cube in under one minute, hence an MG. Go ahead, I’ll look the other way, see if you can slip that past this ole bloodhound!

Sorry Jill, this was intended for Dave Martin. Us geniuses are sometimes just barely off the edge. Or is that, on the edge. Damned if I have that one answered Either!
