Thanks, I try to make the most out of everything that I come across and ants, flies and certain beetles are in abundance now.

Yes I was looking at the mandibles on that bad boy in the download and wondered if they use them to bite. Then I read your narrative. I must say that you have this lighting down. You have highlighted every detail that needs to be seen. So well done.

Thanks, Perhaps it's a good thing that we don't often see things in a magnified view.

Thanks, Doc. I believe that I found a lighting technique that is working out well for me. The little bugger clamped down on one of my fingers that join the palm and it held on tight until I got it into the kill-jar and that was the end of his heroic battle.

This is a Black Carpenter Ant that I found while throwing out the trash this morning. I scooped it up in my hand and brought it in and prepared it for a focus stacking session. They don't like to be held and the tend to bite. I've done others in the past and they make convenient and interesting specimens.

Those suckers can destroy the heart of an entire tree in short-order. We have them and they are prolific.

Thanks, Blair. They can be quite a nuisance however this will not be one of them any longer.
