If a #2 pencil is the most popular, what is in first place?

I had to check that out, being U.K., we use the HB scale.
So before any non Americans ask a #2 is equal to an HB grading everywhere they use that scale.

Not that there is a contest, but, since nearly every tester and practically every teacher says to use a #2 pencil, and by your own words, the #2 pencil is in first place. Just the right amount of carbon to blacken the circle but not enough to smear the results. I get the irony, by the way!

A #1 of course. However, they are a very elusive creature and some consider them extinct.
Thought.....if you have only one #2 pencil, wouldn't it be #1 to you?

Just in case anyone else has my weird sense of curiousity: This sent me off on a « why is the US different? » hunt- actually found the history very interesting, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencil
But that didn’t answer my original question, this came close,
https://cwpencils.com/blogs/news/131980803-beginners-guide-to-pencil-shopping-a-guide-to-grades
which says it started when the Thoreau family adopted it- presumably Walden was written with a #2 pencil.

Well, I see there is such a thing as a #1 pencil. It is listed in the site above.
Thanks! Learned something new today! For me, as someone who spends most of his time trying to think of something I don't know that is a miracle! Curiosity Stream should do a program
on this. I would watch it. No, I am not kidding! It should be mandatory watching in schools because kids
now just click all-day. Writing instruments not needed. Did you know it is a mandatory prison sentence
to write a letter now.
