If one reviews the article that I posted a reference to, the last part of the article identifies that one should format the media in the camera that one is using. I have read references to this in many information locations about the memory card. Further there is in the posted information that there is a 'formatting' procedure that removes all data and that one needs to then format the memory card in the camera one intends to write files too. This last 'formatting' is to be done with a computer that clears the data and 'memory' in a rather invasive fashion so that new files will not become corrupted.

I believe what is in the article that I referenced as I have a rather large memory card that was used in a video camera. I have tried to format the card in two different digital cameras and in the separate PC and none of the formatting have worked. Now I am looking for the use of the more advanced formatting but do not know how this is done with a computer to format cards to remove information that standard camera formatting achieves.

I believe the format in camera (each time) recommendation is intended to <hopefully> eliminate any "quirky operation" problem calls to customer support. It would hopefully eliminate any problems caused by something the user may have done along the way.

I thought you were referring to the original post. So you are having trouble formatting a memory card and neither the camera or your computer is able to do it - is that correct? Please respond with the manufacturer and size of the card so we can recommend a specific path, but for background, you can’t low level format a memory card the way you could old hard drives, but you can write zeros to every memory location (zero fill), but that would be my last choice since it does use a significant amount of write/erase cycles, and memory cards do have a limit, although it is large. First, put the card in your computer attached reader and do the following:

1) Click on Start or the Windows button, select Control Panel, then System and Security.
2) Select Administrative Tools, then Computer Management and Disk management.
3) Right-click on the disk you'd like to format and select Quick Format.
4) After the operation is complete, insert it in your preferred camera and format it there. Did that fix the issue?

If, not go back to the computer, perform steps 1 and 2, but his time, do not choose “quick format” (uncheck the quick format box). After the operation runs (which may take awhile), go back to the camera and format there. Did that fix the problem? If not, go to the card manufacturer’s website and download their erase data tool (each manufacturer has their own) and run that, then format in the camera. If none of that addresses your issue, come back and let us know what happens when it fails, and we’ll go from there.

Good luck.

Friends,
downloaded an SD card to an IPad using an Apple Card reader dongle. All photos transferred but none of the video did.......what am I missing here. Need to do this to three more full SD cards as I’m re formatting to have clear SD cards for upcoming vacation.
Thanks,
Coonman

Do you have a desktop computer or laptop that you can copy the videos to just to make sure that you have them safe and secured as back ups. It sounds like to me it’s an issue between the video format and the iPads operating system.

I frequently upload images from my SD cards to my iPad using the Apple dongle and haven't had any problems, even with videos. I haven't tried it, but you should have a "files" app on your iPad that may allow you to manually transfer the videos.

I appreciate all the responses....thank you
I simply inserted the SD card into the Apple reader, inserted the dongle feed to the lightning port and opened the photo app, activated the import function and it took all photos as I had selected “all photos” option.
Loaded quickly, but still no videos
thanks,
Coonman

Photo apps don't necessarily recognize all types of video files and may not show them, even if they are there.

Some cameras put movies and videos in a different folder than RAW or jpeg files. I had the same issue with my Sony RX10 and RX100. I had to download the photos and then go back and download the videos. It is a multi step process. Search around the SD card and I am sure you will find them.

My suggestion is that you look in the preferences section of the program you are importing with. Many of the photo programs that I have used provide a list of file extensions from which you can choose one or more formats.

I use Picasa for downloading and cataloging my image material. My camera produces "jpg" for still images and "mov" for videos.

I had your problem until told Picasa to also load mov files.

Hope this helps.

I'll take a guess here based on what you wrote. You stated "all photos". Thinking in computer mode, that means photos, not videos. Is that a possibility? It wasn't told to transfer the videos.

Not sure if this will help, but when I've uploaded videos to my iPhone, I thought they would be in "Photos" app. Instead I had to manually search for them and found them in the AppleTV app, under Library, then Home Video. I only suggest this since the iPad and iPhones have similar iOS, so perhaps this is the same.

When in doubt, call Apple at 1800myapple and ask for an iPad/iPhone or Mac ‘Screen Sharing’ session. Always ask an AppleCare pro for a screen sharing. It’s so easy, and faster than the Hog! Easy-Peasey!
I used to do AppleCare support for Apple!

I can't help you with the transfer, since I've been off Apple since the 1990s. The re-format is not necessary, however. All you need do is delete all the old stuff.

The Nikon camera is no problem, tablet see it right under import.
I would see if the tablet software is updated. If this doesn’t help I would go in App Store and search for your specific for you camera model. Hope it helps.

If there was a problem with the card format, nothing would work right.

Reformatting simply erases the directory and recreates it, rendering all previously stored data both recoverable and invisible to anything that reads it. The operating system sees an empty card.

While reformatting isn’t necessary, per se, it is the fastest way to recycle all space on the card, AND it is the safest, since it leaves recoverable data until the camera writes over it.
