Beautiful shots and a great series. We used to lived in a community where construction above us in the hills was happening. It forced the bobcats into our community. We had palm trees and lots of covering in our yard. The first year in our backyard was the Papa bobcat. He stayed for a couple of days then left. The following year he brought his wife and two cubs. They played in our yard with the decorative rocks flipping and running around our yard. It was quite a show. They were removed from our community later that year.

Last March near my hunting camp, a friend killed a six foot rattlesnake (for safety), cut off the head and rattles and threw the carcass on the ground near our old shooting bench. Within hours, the caracara birds discovered the carcass and had almost devoured it when this large male bobcat showed up.

I was fortunate to have my camera nearby and captured the cat playing with the snake like a house cat plays with a mouse. Yet I am convinced by its cautious behavior the bobcat knew this snake could be dangerous as it cavorted off with the carcass.

The bobcat was almost oblivious to my presence and I took almost seventy shots before he became bored and drifted into the brush.

I hope you enjoy viewing this amazing sequence.

A wild guess, but i'm guessing that these images, well done BTW, come from South Texas. Bobcats seem to be quite plentiful there. The problem is just being lucky enough to see one and it remain long enough to photograph it. I have photographed several on a ranch near Zapata and the Rio Grande. Quite unusual images. You never know what you might see in South Texas.

That's not just cool, it's amazing and fantastic! Your friend, though - definitely saved the head and rattles for 'safety'. Why not guide the snake off the premise with a long branch, it's not hard to do, and no less 'safe' than clubbing it to death. I sincerely grant you that this is a photo opportunity not to be missed, that wouldn't have happened without a deceased rattler, but that's a whole 'nother ball game after the fact.
Great photos! Dead wildlife!

To Docshark, cdayton, relbugman:
I was there when these pictures were taken and got some of my own. The snake was a diamondback, almost six feet long. It had been killed by an oilfield truck and picked up by one of the hunters on the lease. The head was cut off because even if the rattler is dead, the fangs can still get you just not pump poison in. He took the rattles to show his grandsons. Our camp has an outhouse that is 100+ yards from the camphouse and a rattler is not something you want to see on the way. The lease was over 4500 acres and gently steering a rattler off the lease would have been impossible. One of my friend’s dog was killed by a rattler and the ranch owner asked us to kill them if we saw them because they also kill cattle. I do not kill other snakes but a rattler in an area where other people and kids might be needs to be eliminated.
This is my picture of the bobcat with the snake and also a picture of a rattlesnake away from the camp that was NOT harmed after I took its picture. I did use a telephoto and jumped up after the picture.

Fotoartist,

I never shoot video. It never enters my mind as a habit pattern, but it absolutely should, so thank you for this valuable reminder. These type comments are noteworthy and entirely appropriate for this forum.

Nice set of shots but killing a rattlesnake for “safety” is a ridiculous idea. Was it chasing you down, intent on devouring you whole? Another of nature’s innocent creatures wantonly killed out of fear.

Your comments indicate incredible naivety. If you with to discuss further, have the courtesy to send me a private message.

In my opinion, the purpose of this forum should be for photography discussion, not an ethics debate.

At times, circumstances do dictate our behavior.
I was just privileged to be in a place and time to get both the photos.
I am a cat person and when Bubba called my attention to what was happening, it was a pleasure to watch the bobcat just acting like a cat and enjoying the “play”.
