Is it possible to mount a DSLR to a Meade 226 refractor? Just starting in astrophotography and this is all I have. Given the weight of the camera Would I be better off just using a smartphone?

I would try working with your cell phone initially, it's easiest to try with.
I did that myself. And I bought a mount than clamps on the eyepiece, and you fool with trying to line it up manually. A real PITA to do.
Now they have mounts for smart phones that have adjustments so you can dial in the view. Looks much nicer.
I'm not suggesting expensive, but I like to look at expensive so I can get ideas to look for in affordable adapters.
With that in mind, take a look at this $99 Orion option. You center up your phone over the aperture in the mount, then it auto centers on an eyepiece. Watch Ken's video on the webpage.

Mine looks a lot like this.

Thanks, good advice. Did the same thing with macro lenses, got extension tubes first.

Yes. You need a T-ring and an adapter for your camera mount.
