Yes! The copper industry makes a fortune from pennies. A modern penny costs 1.8 cents to make. It is only 2.5% copper, the rest being mainly zinc, and zinc prices are rising.

My wife just went to the bank yesterday and deposited $250.00 in wrapped coins to our account.
She reads the news and cashed in all of my .02 cents worth's from the last 50 years.

Are they due to go out of circulation in 2004? I heard that somewhere.
I see only one thing negative (there may be more) and that is that cheapskates won't have anything to put in the poor boxes.
Youth won't care, they use plastic.

I think it was George Carlin who pointed out that you must put your 2 cents in but it's only a penny for your thoughts ... someone is making money!

Canada already did away with pennies some time ago. If the bill comes to 1 or 2 cents they round down - if it comes to 3 or more it rounds up. 12 cents becomes 10, but 8 cents would also become ten and so forth (hope I got that clear in your minds - easy to grasp but hard to write out). 13 cents would become 15, etc. Credit card charges are not affected since no coins are involved, so we are still stuck with prices ending in 99 cents - who do they think they are fooling?

The coin shortage is a real thing. I just saw an article in the local paper that banks are having to ration the amount of coins they give to businesses. They specifically mentioned laundromats, which I use. I hope the next time I go there are enough quarters in the coin changers, or I will have to leave and go try to get some at a bank.

And shorten many UHH topic discussions.
Just think, no Canon versus Nikon, no 'is a cell phone as good as a DSLR'? And more.
Long sigh here.
