I set my camera (canon dslr) to shoot raw and jpeg simultaneously. When I import the files to lightroom, I only get the raw files. what am I doing wrong?

What is wrong, shooting both RAW and JPEG? Are you a RAW shooter, or JPEG?

Stepping back from the philosophical, in the Library module for menu option Edit / Preferences / General tab, check the option that says Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos.

Lightroom will choose the raw files as it sees the jpeg as already done. If you want to process the jpeg files, copy the jpeg files to a separate file on your computer, then load that file into Lightroom.

I shoot raw 99.9 % of the time. I was experimenting with shooting raw and jpeg simultaneous, but was surprised when only the raw files imported to lightroom.

I shot both for years. Don't know what camera you have look the setting up (it is basic) in the book that came with your camera, go on line and get the book from the camera manufacture or camp the tech svs. from you camera company.

If you shoot raw, shooting jpeg is redundant, unless you have a need to immediately share your images. Also, if you are utilizing raw to its greatest advantage, settings that create a reasonable looking (not great) image may not fully exploit the RADR (raw accessible dynamic range). I would suggest you not even bother with jpeg unless you have to. You won't miss it. I've been shooting raw-only since 2006 and have not been inconvenienced at all. And I have done event photography, weddings and other high-volume, time sensitive photography. Not a problem in the least.

WE all do it our way. I'v did both for a lot of years and now shoot only JPG. My choice sand found several of my pro friends doing the same thing. So I don't knock the other guy but willing to help them.
PS spend less time on my computer and sales have not changed, so I getting away with more shooting and less computer time.

Sometimes I shoot jpeg for convenience. Sometime both jpeg an raw so
if I want to make a lot of adjustments I can use the raw shot.
I pull shots off of my 10 bit Sony cam and screen grab some good
frames from the event. I find Photoshop is easy to tweak for PR.
Today now is a winner. Clients love the shots right after the shoot.
Stay safe.

Thank you all. I primarily shoot raw, but i was experimenting and was wondering why the jpegs didn't import. Now I Know you have to set preferences for lightroom to import both.

If you shoot raw, shooting jpeg is redundant, unle... (show quote)

I guess that means you are using pre-sets to develop your RAWs - and turn them into JPGs. If so, that means your software is doing what the camera could do for you. You still have to store those developed pics as well as your original RAWs.
