The blue dasher is very common and widely distributed through North America and into the Bahamas.

Blue Dasher

Dragonflies spend several years of their lives as nymphs living in fresh water; the adults may be on the wing for just a few days or weeks.

Twelve Spotted Skimmer

Blue dashers live near still, calm bodies of water, such as ponds, marshes, slow-moving waterways, and ditches, in warm areas typically at low elevations. The adults roost in trees at night.

All images feature the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-f/5.6L IS II USM, with the EF 1.4x III, mounted to an EOS 5DIII, captured in RAW and processed in Lightroom 6 and Topaz DeNoise 6.

Blue Dasher

Adult dragonflies will eat nearly any flying insect, such as a moth or fly. Nymphs have a diet that includes other aquatic larvae, small fish, and tadpoles.

Blue Dasher

The blue dasher hunts by keeping still and waiting for suitable prey to come within range. When it does, they dart from their position to catch it. They eat up to 10% of the body weight each day in food.

Blue Dasher discussion

Dragonflies are symbols of courage, strength, and happiness in Japan, but are seen as sinister in European folklore.

Fascinating subjects, aren't they? Before peripheral neuropathy I went to a number of places to get pictures of them. Were you able to catch any in flight?

Thank you Bruce, Delderby, Bob, nimbushopper! I've had some good look with dragonflies over the years, but my first visit back to this location was the best of all. Just the right light behind me for some bushes in the water where the dashers were comfortable landing near me. The results will probably yield a few posts.

Thanks for your great photos of dragonflys. I enjoy shooting them with my D850 and 200-500 because it focuses to 7.3 feet. Dragonflys between 8 and 15 feet can give great shots at 500mm. I'll be looking for some on this morning's walk.

Thank you Nolan, Paul, PixelStan77! There were other types flying, but mostly only blue dashers landed where I was seated. Maybe tomorrow I'll get another chance at this pond. Glad you enjoyed.

Paul, about three weeks I took a picture of a bird and at the time didn't see the dragonfly in the frame that the bird was about to nab. Fortunately I was shooting in continuous and got the shot before it got nabbed and after. These are nice shots and there are many places in your area for photographing dragonflies. Several of the forest preserves have ponds.

Thank you JRiepe! I live downtown by Wrigley and haven't owned a car in this century. The bus and my feet have me down around the Zoo mostly where some ponds for dragons, ducks and such hang out.

One time at Wrigley at a Cubs game there were dragonflies flying around. What was attracting them there I have no idea.

Outstanding as usual Paul. Interesting to find out that Japan finds the dragonfly a symbol of courage, strength, and happiness, but Europeans see them as sinister.
Love them in full screen - Jim
