One of my favorite ballads. I played along with this recording 100's of times and never grew tired of it.
Performed by Lee Morgan, who met his death at the age of 32. He was shot by his common law wife. Lee was taught by Clifford Brown (the tune was named in tribute to him), who died in a car accident at the tender age of 25.
The tune, written by the tenor sax player, Benny Golson, also performs on the track. The composition, in my opinion, captures the sadness of both tragedies.
I had the privilege of seeing & hearing Lee Morgan at Birdland.

Glorious music, Mark! Many thanks.
Great listening. I saw him in Detroit at the Drome Lounge in the mid 60's. A reak talent gone too soon.

Thanks jazztrader & cincykid!! I find the early deaths of so many jazz artists to be a tragic loss in our world. The list is way too long!!

Exquisite. Superb. This was the golden age of jazz.
Well done, Mark.

Absolutely, Bill!! 50's - 60's were fantastic. NYC had tons of clubs, reasonably priced, to hear live jazz. I used to go to Birdland and sit in the area called "The Gallery". It was adjacent to the bandstand and had folding chairs. Admission was $2 for live jazz, usually two groups a night on a revolving stage, from 8 - 3 PM. Incredible!!

Right!! BTW- You have Amazon Prime - there is a movie called, "I Called Him Morgan" on Prime. It's somewhat his biography, but concentrates on the relationship between he and his common law wife who shot him. Lot of his music!! I watched it twice. Give it a try.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

Love this tune, thanks Mark. Always, always liked his playing ballads, one of my favorites being “Invitation,” when he was with Blakey. There’s a great documentary out on Netflix about him, his death, and Helen “I Called Him Morgan.”
