The subscription gives ordinary people the chance to use the same software as the rich.

Thanks for input. I use Photos for a backup And that works fine but not nearly as powerful as Aperture.

I have been using Aperture for photo editing and storage for years. Apple in their infinite wisdom has stopped supporting Aperture. I cannot upgrade my Operating system without fear of losing functionality of Aperture. I was ready to convert to Lightroom when Adobe stopped selling the stand alone version. I do not want to be plagued with yet another monthly payment. My problem is what software package can I purchase that would at least do most things Aperture did. Keyword is Purchase. I chatted with ACDSee and they could not answer my questions. Could not talk to a person due to current pandemic.

I appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.📷

I use ACDSee Photo Studio 6 for the Mac. It does not have all the bells and whistles Aperture had but has the needed ones. In answer to your question it's dam/cataloging is very good. You can flag, color label, rate and add keywords to your searches. It is a clean and fast program which I have found to be very stable too. Having come from Aperture I miss that program but at least now I have a program I can use and feel good about.

I was in hell after Apple stopped Supporting Aperture. I didn’t want to subscribe to Adobe and was in limbo for what seemed like years. Tried PSElements and was disappointed with organizing capability. I finally bought ON1 PhotoRAW and was initially disappointed but that was 4 years ago and it has been getting better and better. I would now recommend it enthusiastically. It is quite a bit more robust than Aperture. The Browse mode lets you organize photos anywhere. I save all my files to the Pictures folder in Finder or to Files on my desktop and work from there. Good luck! Losing Aperture was a real hassle for me.

If you want a free open-source replacement to LR, you might check out DarkTable. It has the database for catalog information like LightRoom, non-destructive editing, Hundreds of excellent trutorials on Youtube.

I switched from Aperture in 2014. I still miss it. There is no perfect replacement.

If I can be of any help please feel free to send me a PM.

Me too. I love APERTURE and am devastated when apple decided to drop it. I am 87 and starting with something new is difficult for me. Now being away from home quarantined without my computer I am even more lost. I bought for $69 a ADOBE PHOTOSHOP Limited BOXED WITH CD. I am using this along with my wonderful set (now DXO ) of wonderful stuff I can’t remember...that allows me to work on my images I am getting by . But I do miss APERTURE which is gone since all the APPLE upgrades. Being away from my computer and being 87 has made it difficult to do work on my images. I only have my iPad and whatever is the best. I feel sorry for you my friend without APERTURE.

I have faced the exact same challenge. I now use both Luminar 4 and Capture One...both can be purchased. C 1 is much more expensive & complicated than Luminar 4. Luminar 4 is a breeze, cheap, and powerful & has made my post so fast and dare I say, enjoyable again.

Cheers!

RFnikon, Aperture is gone. It was was discontinued in 2014 and it’s amazing it worked this long. Be happy for that.

Please accept that Aperture is gone. Change is always bittersweet, there are good and bad things. Look for the good. Focus on those things that are good so you can enjoy your life.

Life is to short to worry about things we cannot change.

I switched from Aperture to Capture One (v 10) two years ago. Except for the file creation and/or retrieval which is hideous (catalogs vs. sessions vs. God knows what) and way more complex than it needs to be, it is a superb program that allows editing of raw shots well beyond what Aperture could do. The tools and masks available opened up new possibilities. I suspect that the current version does even more. Capture One is not cheap but it will do everything you want and then some.

I agree 100%. Great software, plenty of training videos and webinars and works great in Macs. I stopped using LR and Luminar 3 and 4.

Have you looked at the new IPhoto? I too used aperture and was perplexed at MAC for discontinuing it. Now iPhoto incorporates most of the functionality of aperture. You should check it out if you are looking for basic editing and storage.

iPhoto is for iOS or iPadOS (phone or tablet). There is a Photos app on the Mac.

Same problem exactly - solution (for me) is don't upgrade OS. High Sierra runs perfectly on my iMac and MacBooks, Aperture runs perfectly nothing else needed on the Macs so why change. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

As was pointed out by Burkphoto, if you are going to run an old version of any OS, Mac, Windows or etc., then disconnect it permanently from the internet.

That is the rational, reasonable, safe answer to "why change".

If you are running software that is no longer supported then disconnecting it from the internet will prevent potential malware from getting on the computer. Older software is fine so long as it is still supported.
