Yeah, that happens. If you buy it at the higher price, it will probably drop in price the next day. It's a shame they do that. If they could sell it at $1896, selling it at $2346 is just increasing their profit. although, $1896 seems rather low compared with prices I have seen in the past. I think $2,346 is the standard price. Buying at $1896 would have been a smart move. I bought one on eBay in 2013, not sure if it was new or used. It cost $2,119.

I suspect $1896 was a temporary price drop to sell more units.

So this is a business expense.
You'll have to raise your rates a bit to cover it.

I have been saving up my cash, and the lens I want, the Nikkor 70-200E FL, had been listed absolutely everywhere for 1896.00. I had my B&H cart loaded up, and went to look, and the price of that lens jumped from that to 2346 on every single site. Are price jumps like this common? It’s really disappointing because I scrimped and saved for the last two months to get that damn lens. I’ll probably just get it at mpb or KEH now, but it’ll end up costing about the same as I was gonna get it from B&H new with warranty. I kind of need it now, because I’ve been holding off on some gigs, but do you all think I should wait or try to get it at that previous price?
Thanks all.

I have noticed that a lot of businesses are raising their prices lately to try to make up for lost business during shutdowns.

I purchased that lens from Nikon refurbished last fall for $1699 on their 10% off refurbished priced sale. Works great and looks new. But i know warranty is 3 months verses 1 year. Image quality is fantastic. Just used for fireworks and the color, contrast and lack of flare was amazing. Good luck!

I wish I could “scrimp and save” almost $2000 in 2 months. It would take me a lot longer than that to save that much for something as extravagant as a lens. Sacrifice for a couple more weeks and you can pay the new price. Or wait a month or so and it will be on sale again. Since retirement things like that lens would be on my if I win the lottery list. Since I am not a professional photographer I could not justify that kinda money for a lens that say a 70-300 would work just as well for my kinda photography. My wife would pitch a huge fit if I spent any more money on photo equipment now. She does love the travel and family shots I take.

By the way, I am very happy for you and hope you can get the new lens soon. I for one don’t like to buy used. I don’t want someone else’s problems. I know most of the used stuff is really good, but I don’t like to chance it. So I would either save some more or just wait for the next sale..

I have too many hobbies and interest that cost money so I am choosey about what I spend my money on. Golf takes a huge chunk of my discretionary funds. Electronics another chunk, travel, grandkids and other stuff.

With a wife and family, there are few funds that are purely discretionary.
But having been in the other situation, they are worth having.

If I were alone I would probably move to FF with a couple lenses. Might be fun to have. But travel would not happen and that is where a lot of my photography come into play.

Nikon USA site has the 70-200mm 2.8 refurbished for $1,800. I have purchased several lenses refurbished from Nikon and they are indistinguishable from new and I am a picky person.
Great lens worth what ever you pay for it.

It is a really great lens that I used with my Nikon D600 and gave my camera to my grand daughter. I moved on to Sony AR7111 and was able to use some of my nikon lenses with it, but could only use manual focus and limited activity with my Nikon lens. I have it for sale with gear focus for $1195.

Thought it was my best lens.

Apparently did not press send button when I first typed this. Had Nikon D600 and switched to Sony AR7III. Kept several of my lenses, but my Nikon 70 - 200 mm F 2.8 would not work well with my new camera despite the adapter I purchased. Would only work in manual mode with a few settings. Gave my camera to my grandchild.

My Nikon 70 - 200 mm F 2.8 is on sale with gear focus for $1195. Sounds like I should up the price. Great lens.

One of my most often used statements in reference to price increases is that, "The price of the item has not gone up...the value of the dollar has gone down". It now takes more dollars to buy the same item.

When I started in the business in 1967, the apprentice wage was $2.50 per hour and the journeyman wage was $5.00. It took five years of apprenticeship to become a journeyman. I bought our 1967 Rambler American four door six cylinder automatic with AM-Radio and no A/C brand new off the lot for $1,920. Our rent was $75 per month and cigarettes were $0.25 a pack.

When I retired in 2018 our journeyman's wage package was $82.50 per hour and the same comparable new car, with A/C was in the $20,000 range. The same items yet the value of the dollar takes more than it did in years past.

And...if you think that's bad, a pack of toilet paper in Venezuela today is 44,841 Bs.S. People are literally wiping their ass with the Venezuela dollar than with expensive toilet paper. AND...a Volkswagen golf 1.4 tsi 150 cv (or equivalent), with no extras, new costs 300,418,000 Bs.S.

Of course, Venezuela is a Socialist form of government and thankfully there is no one in America that would ever want it to become one also.

There are two issues. The first is that distributors like Nikon USA force authorized retailers to abide by MAP (minimum advertised price) and unilateral price (minimum selling price) programs they impose and enforce rigorously. The second is that if Nikon USA had a limited time promotion (an instant rebate) which expired, authorized retailers are obliged to comply with the rebate provisions.

With purchase from KEH, you get six month warranty, and their items tend to exceed the quality ratings they grade their units.

Supply and demand I have Call leagues that work at Bh. and they’re telling me supply is low because -people aren’t buying and getting product from Japan -in this virus
Is going is slower than usual

that could be the reason for that price swing just a thought
