Last Wednesday morning as I was loading the garbage in the barn to take to the road I picked up a big bag and underneath it was a copperhead. Two copperhead encounters in a 4-day period. Keeps an old man alert.

We have copperheads and rattlesnakes. On a hike one day I ran into some ladies who had encountered a rattlesnake and I was so wishing it had been me so I could have taken some pictures. I've never seen one in the wild.
If you're ever in the Cross Timbers of Texas, come by and see us. We have a canyon where they say the rattlers are the size of one of your legs. Personally, I have never been down in that part of the canyon, but I can point you in that direction.

There are many cottonmouths at the state conservation area not far from me. On February 3rd of this year we had an unusually warm day which brought this snake out to sun itself. It was on the boat dock that I walked to the end of looking up hoping to see an osprey or eagle. On my way back no longer looking up I saw this snake and realized I must have walked right past without seeing it. I'm sure he had not warmed up enough to strike luckily for me. But I also believe had he been warm enough his first instinct would be to flee. If I had stepped on him though it probably would have been a different story.

Nice Shot, must share it with my Wife, she will probably ask for 8x10 copies!!
Great shot of a big bad snake. Would you look at the size of those folded back venom injectors.
Yes, I know Texas and a few other southeastern states have a lot of rattlers.
Sorry, in my last reply I failed to hit quote reply but it was to trackmag's reply.

Terrific image of that snakeās signature method of warning display, analogous to a rattlesnakeās rattling! As I recall southern Illinois is the northern extreme of its range.

Would she want this one instead?
I've had a little experience with Cottonmouths and I have yet to see one "flee". A bad ass snake. It seems that all cottonmouths have an attitude and fleeing is not one of them
Nasty reptile. They can be quite aggressive. Nice image.
Good catch! Reminds me of a baby bird.

Love this. I keep ball pythons and they are about as docile as can be. I had a run in with an 8ft rat snake a couple weeks ago and although not venomous that thing had big big attitude and fleeing was the last thing on its mind. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera with me that day. Great shot!

Yeah, I had one follow me down my driveway like a puppy dog when I was headed to the garbage can with a bag of garbage. When I turned around it was right behind me and I must have jumped 3 feet off the ground. It slithered back and went under a watermelon vine I had allowed to grow up by the back porch. I blew it's head off with a shotgun. I went over the watermelon vine with a lawnmower.
