Thanks trix, rubin, and others. I'm no great photographer and probably never will be. The only reason I got the 5ds-r other than want for a good camera was that I saved thousands of dollars on a refurbished one. Never could have justified it with my skill level or depth of pocket.
You've justified what I already knew. It's going to cost me for a compatible lens. Thanks very much for the suggestions. i appreciate all the help from this forum. Now to practice taking sharp photos while saving for another lens.

Agreed the lenses are mediocre but you are the second reply to mention adapting. Yes I see you don’t recommend it ..... but what puzzles me is the very notion that these lenses would not already fit directly onto his new camera.

Do both of you assume those lenses are in Nikon mount, and that instead of buying a D850 he jumped ship for the 5DS-R ? That to me seems like quite a stretch. So, what’s missing here ?

I think what they assume or know is that his previous camera was an APS-C, crop sensor and the lens he has are EF-S and will not mount on a FF Canon body. I may be wrong, but that is what I am assuming.

Right ... Canon EF-s lenses won’t fit and no adapter could even be sketched to fit them. OTOH the OP has EF mount Sigma or Tamron lenses, cuz only Canon makes EF-s lenses. Acoarst the old lenses only cover half of the 5DS-R sensor, but that camera has “mega MPs” to discard and never miss them ;-)

I recently purchased a canon 5ds-r camera. I was spoiled with the sigma 16-300mm, I believe and the tameron 18-400mm lens. I foolishly bought a canon ef 135 1:2 l lens, not reealizing it had no wide angle capability. will the new L lens with a focus range shown give a zoom capability? Can anyone recommend a good zoom a good zoom lens that will work on this camera? Getting too old to completely understand the new technology.

Hi Leigh,

5DS-R is an ultra high resolution 50MP camera that "demands" good lenses. Any lens short-comings will be apparent in images.

The Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM lens is legendary, with "cult" status as a portrait lens.

For wide angle, I would suggest:

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM or...
EF 16-35mm f/2.8L "III" USM. Both are top notch!

Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM and...
EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM are more, both covering wide to short telephoto.

When they first introduced the camera, Canon issued a list of lenses they recommended for use on it... Lenses they thought were a good match for the quality potential of the camera. You'll find that list here:

https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=15356

Note, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 III recommended above isn't on Canon's list because it has not been introduced yet. The earlier versions weren't nearly as good as the III, which was first announced about a year after the 5DS cameras. Some other, more recently introduced lenses might not have been included on that list, that now should be. Of course, Canon only listed Canon lenses... no Sigma or Tamron. And certainly no "do it all" zooms like you referred to... they just compromise way too much on image quality for use on the 5DS cameras.

It's odd, too, that the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L "IS" USM lens isn't on the Canon list, as noted by the Bryan at his website. The "IS" version is actually sharper than the non-IS version that Canon recommends. There also is a more recently introduced EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM "II", with virtually identical image quality to the lens it replaced, which would be a good choice too.

The EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, 24-105mm f/4L IS USM II and 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM are not on the list because they don't have the top image quality the lens demands. The older EF 17-40mm f/4L USM is another lens I'd avoid with the 5DS cameras.

The older 24-70mm f/2.8L USM would be fine on the 5DS, but isn't on Canon's list because it had been superseded by the II several years before the camera was introduced. There are some other early lenses that would be great on the camera, too, and aren't on the list. They will generally be L-series.

The above website also has extensive reviews of most lenses made to fit Canon, as well as the cameras themselves. You might find it helpful.

If I were you I would take a look at the Tamron 35 to 150 mm. If you want something wider to go with that then check out the Tamron 17 to 35. Would be great reasonably priced two lens set for you

As it turns out, only Canon brand APS-C lenses (EF-S) won't mount on a full frame body. Lenses by Sigma and Tamron will but vignette, they won't cover the full sensor at their wide settings.
