Fotoartist, I believe you said there were other photographers present during this shooting session. You have some excellent poses/angles, so I am wondering how the "choreography" was managed. Did she hold a pose for a period time while photogs jumped into "the right place," or did photogs just stay in their chosen spot while she rotated in front of them? How many photogs? How long was a pose held? What are you doing in PP to tweak the images? Just curious how you managed this great series.

Thanks everyone for the comments. This was a session at Midwest Photography Workshops near Detroit. In this large studio room there were two 5 foot soft boxes at 45º angles and a rear kicker light all aimed at a spot on the floor over which the Aerialist hung her ropes which I now realize is the reason why the lighting remained good as she maneuvered around. Bryce Denison the owner set this up.

I was one of 6 shooters who all used Pocket Wizards set on the same channel. We would take turns but no two people could shoot at close to the same time as it would take a second or so for the lights to charge back. We all had a share of black frames. We shot in teams of 3. You couldn't get behind the model so she performed towards the front half of the room. She seemed to know to hold the poses. They were all her routines, a lot of variety, very creative. I have shot other aerialists here too but they were not as good and neither were my results with them.

I used my Nikon D4s with a 24-120 lens. My settings were mostly f13 at ISO 400. We used a huge Black curtain over the entire area including the floor most of the time. The walls and floor were white with a cove which we did use that way for a bit. In Photoshop, I basically cleaned up the backgrounds from any light fixtures and sometimes the ceiling and occasionally flare if a light got in the pic. On her, I didn't retouch much. She had occasional rope marks which appeared reddish and I neutralized them.

Some poses scrunched up her body parts unattractively and I excluded all those. And as she was totally uninhibited about nudity, I excluded the overly explicit shots. I have a few more shots to come which are my favorites and they are not explicit.

So, thanks for the response, everyone. I didn't know how these would go over till I posted them here as I had never seen nude aerialist shots posted before.

It was jaw dropping for me to see her maneuver in mid-air and assume this position with no assistance. If she made a mistake she would have hit the cement floor. Does anyone see this pose as only of prurient interest? I think the lighting and dark bkg. adds graphic art qualities to the pic.

Great image and impressive pose. The lighting on the model is just right - it adds complexity to her body - reveals the amount of athleticism she has but has enough fill so that nothing disappears into a shadow. I'm not sure about the white patch - for me it draws attention away from the model - its a distraction. I think the image might be better without it. The pose is impressive and difficult and the aplomb in her expression is great. Its not prurient at all. But that's a nit on a great image and impressive pose.

In my opinion to only be prurient that had to be the main purpose of the photograph. This would still have been a great photo in composition, lighting, posing and instant of capture even if she had been dressed in gymnastic clothing.

Thanks. I left the flare area in on this shot, it was in several. I even played it up here. I thought it helped in moving the center of interest away from the center.

Beautiful. I also immediately thought of the da Vinci drawing when I first saw it. Thanks for sharing it. (Actually, I’m just noticing that your avatar has a bit of a Leonardo appearance 😊)

Going thru comments, went back to photo, then happen to lay my phone down with photo upside down. It looks just as amazing, if not more so - that is a rarity.
