I'm going to disagree with just about every thing on this thread. My experience in North Texas has not been that great and I'm pretty sure I won't miss them when/if they are gone. 90% of what I get in the mail goes straight to the recycling can and the other ten percent could be accomplished by email.

The USPS is a dinosaur and will probably go the way of magazines and newspapers if it just sticks to mail. Delivering packages is their only hope for a raison d'etre.

Not every American owns a computer, and has access to e-mail.
The government—federal, state, local, relies on the Postal Service to deliver critical, time-sensitive, verifiable information, of all types, to those unfortunate people. Businesses as well.
How short-sighted can one man be?

That is the individual postal worker that needs trained. The mail is presorted and placed in delivery order by the distribution center. The problem of wrong mail is the fault of the carrier. Example: if there is a day when you don’t get mail, if the carrier doesn’t look at the address and just puts the next batch in yours then the rest of the street will be off. The carrier needs retrained.

I have seen posts both positive and negative about all of the mail/package carriers. My take is that the level of service differs dramatically depending on the part of the country in which you live. Is it that the people are just so different in attitude, or is it the water they drink. I don't know, but here in Nashville Tn the people are kinder and so are our delivery people.

You are very correct. I have seen this too and this attitude and the people of certain 'areas' 'states-cities' do reflect that in all areas of life too. Just look at new. I do not watch TV, Have not had one in twenty years but it is obvious. Despite all of this, our Postal service is the best. I have a friend who has lived in Belize for twenty years. I too have been looking to move there too. He mentioned just last month, that in the 20 years he has been there, only ONE (1) letter letter got delivered. We Americans take too much for granted. Fresh water from the faucets, electricity, firemen, police, health care, etc. etc. Auto repairs, on and on.
oh well my soap box is falling apart,

People tend to think that the letter carrier is the only person responsible in the Postal Service to ensure timely, accurate delivery of mail pieces. The letter carrier, who delivers the mail piece, is only the last Link in a chain of events starting with the piece being dropped into a pick-up receptacle. Mail handlers and mail processors work through the night preparing millions of letters, flats, and packages for delivery by the carrier the next day.
Letters carriers are only the visible part of the process.
The Postal Service does an incredible job of delivering millions of mail pieces timely and accurately every day throughout the world. People complain when one piece is delayed, but say little about the millions of timely deliveries that are ROUTINE.
Thanks for posting.

The mail is not always pre-sorted correctly— meaning delivery point sequence is some times flawed. The mail is sorted by optical characters readers. The carrier should look at the mail piece in the course of delivery, but re-training is not what the carrier needs.

Bruce, your words are much appreciated. I am retired and biased. Having worked in a 24/7 postal distribution center, I never dealt with the public. My first day on the job (10pm-6am shift for my first 15 years) I asked myself if I had made a mistake. For hours I was observing extreme 'conviviality' amongst workers and I couldn't imagine how we could ever get the voluminous amount of mail to its destinations. Though people were working, I couldn't sense an air of concern for the job. Then...it was like a robotic silent alarm went off in everyone's head simultaneously and there was no doubt where the purpose was headed. That savior-faire carried me through 28 years of service. Bad apples? Yup, they are in every job, but I saw very few over the span of my career. Problems? Sure, but not its employees. Perfect, no, but who is. The strongest bond in the USPS is the one between the workers and the public. I can tell you first hand that in the heart of a postal worker there is nothing more important about the job than getting the mail to the customer.

WOW ! Logan;
what a wonderful reply, thank you so very much for a great explanation from one 'who was there' .
I hope your words encourage others to appreciate our postal and others also in a better understanding.
Thank you sir,

You sound like the people who lamented the end of the horse and buggy when the automobile arrived on the scene.

Even the government tries to use digital media. How many people file their taxes on line? Sorry, the world is changing and either the USPS adapts or dies.

By the way, did you ever notice how many of those poor unfortunate people have cell phones?

Do you live in a cave on Mars ?
The post office has changed and updated with technology. We just do not see it. Have you been to your post office web site ? as compared to other government agencies and institutions, they are doing quit well. If you do not local postal delivery, good for you. Not everyone is is so special as you.

USPS always delivers my packages with plastic bags, or will drop them off the house,
Our FEDEX man has been leaving all of the packages for our neighborhood by the mailboxes.
These mailboxes are 1/4 of a mile away in a desolate street. Anybody can just pick up these packages.
Even if it is stated "Signature Required" When you look at the tracking number it says-delivered to home, and signature included.
FEDEX has been told about these instances, but will not do anything about it.
I'll take USPS any day over FEDEX

I believe the quality of their service depends on the area we live in. I lived in a town in NJ for 33 years, the USPS was the worse. Missing packages, and item from a few towns away was common. Trying to put a claim is impossible. I was once notified of a package I was expecting, it never was, I contacted them and they said they did delivered it. They washed their hands of the matter, but thankfully the seller covered the loss.
I know that USPS handles millions of letters, and packages and mistakes are expected. For the last 3 years I’ve moved to another town about 15 miles from my previous address, so for not one problem.

Been 'here' since 1993. USPS used to be great! Then, for whatever reason, went down Sir John's invention. Now, it's hit and miss depending on which carrier is doing the route. But, they're better than they were at their low point.

I just noticed you are located in North Texas. One of the other members in the Plano area reported a good report of his service. I suspect by your attitude that you are not a real Texan and probably a transplant from one of the screwed up states. If so, please go back. You bring Texas and us native Texans a bad smell.
Most sincerely;
bruce.

My Mother’s Estate is in its last steps - slowed by the Covid-19 virus, of course. From contacts with my siblings, the lawyer and the court system have been more of a slow-down than has delivery by USPS {court in Indiana; brother in Albuquerque New Mexico; sister in Western Virginia} since I wanted physical copies of the signatures.
