Greenwich England UK

Greenwich (/ˈɡrɛnɪtʃ/ (About this soundlisten) GREN-itch, /ˈɡrɪnɪdʒ/ GRIN-ij, /ˈɡrɪnɪtʃ/ GRIN-itch, or /ˈɡrɛnɪdʒ/ GREN-ij[1][2]) is an area of South East London, England, centred 5.5 miles (8.9 km) east-southeast of Charing Cross. It is within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, to which it lends its name. Historically it was in the county of Kentfor hundreds of years,[3] then the County of London from 1889 to 1965.

The Royal Observatory has a wonderful museum of time with a copy of Harrison's first nautical chronometer that I understand never went to sea because the second was so much simpler and better.

If you look at the Royal observatory in Google Earth, the Prime meridian (0 longitude E-W) of the mathematical (inertial) Earth is about 80 m east of the King's meridian.

Where's the meridian? Shouldn't there be a BIG WHITE LINE down the center of the city?

I have not been there for at least 20 years, but as I remember, the original observatory was a rectangular building in the middle of a group at the west end of broad Bower or Blackheath Avenue. If you call it up in Google Earth, you can see a short, white line painted on the sidewalk in the shadow north of the middle building that extends into the sunlit plaza beyond marked by the shadows of people. That is the original meridian now at -0.001470 decimal degrees longitude (minus for west) according to Google. Mathematical zero E-W is 101.77 m east of this painted line.
G.E identifies the cross-shaped building at the bottom as the Royal Observatory.

Diagonally across the meridian plaza, you can see a square building, a "camera," which is a darkened room with a pinhole in one wall and an image of Greenwich and the Docklands on the opposite wall.

Neat place, if we can ever go back.

We ended a cruise there two years ago (I'll be posting photos soon) and here is a photo I took straddling the meridian, standing in two hemispheres. This was near the Royal Observatory.
