Recent Bird Photos At Hill City, SD

We had the good fortune of observing a pair of Western Grebes at this small lake - kinda unusual as they are a little out of their normal range. Beautiful elegant little birds - hope my photos do them justice.
We continue to observe the nesting Osprey pair at the same lake. I think they have a rather mischievous streak to their personality. I saw the female dive-bomb a pair of geese several times. I can only imagine the conversation she had with her mate back at the nest..."you should have seen the look on their faces - their eyes were big as saucers just before they dove underwater."

Grew up near Hill City. Never saw grebes. It is neat. Hope they stay. Would love to know which little lake.

We were surprised to see Western Grebes on such a small lake. Not only Western Grebes but for a short time there was an Eared Grebe on the lake as well. It’s actually Major Lake in Hill City. The Eared Grebe was the first to leave after about 5 days and the Western Grebes also did not stay. We did however see one more Western Grebe on Stockade Lake near Custer, SD.
