Not sure what creates the pattern, I believe there is still some wind that effects the design, and possibly the remnants of Micro meteors as they burn up in the upper atmosphere.

NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS OVER LONDON: On the summer solstice, a midnight display of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) startled sky watchers in London, who could see tendrils of frosted meteor smoke glowing through the city's normally-overpowering urban lights. The outbreak over London is a sign that even more intense NLCs could be on the way. Get the full story at Spaceweather.com.

Thought I would post here: Noctilucent clouds are very rare, and rarely show this far South, They normally are at the Higher Latitudes and center over the North Pole area. Meterologist claim that they are formed by dust that is left in the "higher Altitudes" from meteors and bind to microscopic water droplets that create the hi altitudes clouds at 60,000' to 450,000' ( please feel to educate yourself by Googling this rare phenomenon)

Both an interesting account and a beautiful photograph! Clouds are fabulous!

What I believe you captured is a phenomenon called civil or nautical twilight. Get up tomorrow morning and you'll see the same thing. Exsate is an app that provides all that information. I'm surprised how many hoggers you duped.

Wow, UCSB 1946.
I grew up in Berkeley and attended Cal and UC Riverside, located at the hot eastern end of the LA basin. I’m sorry. I thought UCSB started about 1952. Reading it’s history, it is older than I thought, though it started in Santa Barbara.
I occasionally drove down 101 to UCR and would drive through the Goleta campus.
Students heading to the beach with a beach blanket in one hand and books in the other. Pretty hedonistic, I thought. What sort of education did they get?
