Where Oh Where Did My Monitor Go?

My computer can't find the monitor. It's sitting less than two feet away from it, and it's connected by a cable. Still, it can't find it. This was a "sometimes" problem, but now it always. It could be the cable; it could be the monitor; it could be the graphics card, etc. I've usually had two working Windows computers, but now I have just one. Maybe I'll use the Dell laptop and get my files from the NAS. I've been using the Mac for the last two days, but my WordPerfect and Quicken files work only with Windows. I really don't feel like troubleshooting today. Poor Jerry.

Computers are great - when they work.

"It could be the cable; it could be the monitor; it could be the graphics card, etc." It could be a "Jerry". Just kidding!!!

Why I switched. After 25 years with Microsoft was fed up with one problem after another. Got a used MAC in 2015 to learn. 6 months later bought a new MAC lap top. Then a MAC desktop no problems with any of them. Would NEVER return to anything Microsoft

Sorry, Jerry!!! Since you have a few computers, (you must be very rich ) have you connected the monitor to another computer to help identify the problem? I do not recall a cable being the source of an issue with any of my computers over the past 35 years. It's possible, but I think, unlikely.

Good luck. I know how frustrating that must be.

Two types of computer users: 1. the PC type who is comfortable with it and says "I hear good things about the Macs, and 2. the Mac user who says "APPLE IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO AND PCs SUCK!"

Windows have bugs, and apples have worms. I bought an Mac laptop a few years ago. Used it for a few months. I was so used to Windows that I wound up selling the Apple and buying a new PC.
I'm a PC user who says, "WINDOWS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO AND APPLES SUCK!" :)

Believe me, that was the favorite sentence around here for a while since using a PC starting with Windows 95 in '95.
However after many months got used to the idiosyncrasies of this 2012 MacBook Pro and absolutely will not go back. It is still my favorite piece of computer gear even though the battery will last only about 3 hours now.
But now I am again saying the last two words of that same sentence about the keyboard on my new MacBook Pro, oh well, maybe I'll get used to it whenever this old laptop completely dies and I have to use it.
These things foster genuine love/hate relationships with their users.

Good decision! I did the same thing in 2008 and never looked back!

Sorry to hear
I’m sure if you’ve checked all components it’s probably the monitor.
C’est la vie

Jerry,
Do you get anything on the monitor like "signal not detected" or just a black screen? Mark and a very few helpful others are right, you have to systematically check each component (monitor, cable, graphics card) to isolate the issue.

For all the others, your brand loyalty comments provide zero value in efforts to help Jerry.

I brought a monitor in from the garage, but it's not HDMI, so I have to find the appropriate cable.

I built this one and a similar one for my son in 2016. It has not been trouble-free. I know some of the problems were the fault of Windows. The Asus MoBo went bad, but Asus had stopped making it. I sent it to them, and they got it working, under warranty.

I've always had two working Windows computers available, so I could keep going if one had problems. I'll have to get the Dell laptop (Win7) out and get access to my files. I'm not going to try to connect the monitor to a windows computer. That would probably take a few hours in itself.

I'm not rich, but I do shop wisely, and I don't throw things away. I'll look in the garage and see if I have enough parts to get one of my old Dells working.
