My household is 100% bilingual (English and French) and often we have a great laugh reading the English translation across the bottom when the speaker lets loose in French. More often than not it is "sanitized" as well a shortened to fit into a couple of words. Plus you lose the emotion and humor that a native speech will ofen have. So we look to find which button to push on our TV to go the the original language and skip any translation.

I know a bit of French, and I sometimes notice discrepancies. Another thing I notice in foreign movies is the use of American idiosyncrasies that foreign languages probably don't use.

I record virtually everything I watch on TV so I can zap the commercials, but it also allows you to pause it for bathroom breaks, phone calls, etc.

Ah yes. Plus the significant savings in time to watch the entire thing (25%?). And getting through the evening without anyone ‘screaming’ at you about some new invention.

We agree Jerry. Between Netflix and Amazon Prime we get a lot of dubbed programming.

Occasionally I find a foreign film with the "american" version remake. Latest one was "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", the original in Swedish with subtitles and then the Hollywood version. Interesting to watch the difference in approaches. Seven Samurai and Magnificent Seven another example.

In my humble opinion the foreign version is generally better

I watch a lot of foreign movies on www.tubitv.com The Russian movies are among my favorites. Tubi streams on my TV, so I watch it there, but if I'm on the road I watch it on the internet. The independent nations that once were part of the Soviet Union come to grips with their pasts in many of the movies. And example: Why did Estonians fight for both the Nazis and the Red Army? 1944 (the movie title) deals with the problem. Tubi is a free streaming service.

Will watch ACORN for police dramas; however the best, IMHO, are produced by YELLOW BIRD : Girl with Dragon Tattoo series and Wallander.
