United States Air Force, 1962 to 1984. Best assignment was being a unit commander on a spy base. I was the commander, but I had a new assignment after 6 years. Two days before I left, the top commander of the USAF sent me a note of congratulations, saying I was the top commander in the entire USAF. Wow, off to the Pentagon for 6 years and then I retired on a Friday. On Monday I was teaching AFROTC in Maryland. I stayed for 10 1/2 years and got a retirement again. Sure loved the kids. Tony, now in Chico, CA.

Vern, you beat me by one year. I joined the Army Air Force Reserves in 1944 but I wasn't called up until June 1945, then arrived in Germany in early December, 1945. Returned to the Z.I. (Zone of the Interior, Army speak for U.S.A.) Sept. 1948. Vern, we didn't do too bad in restoring Germany to the civilized world after they went down the tubes under Hitler.

Z.I. (Zone of the Interior)… now that is an old one I haven't heard. They have called it CONUS (continental United States) since I joined the military in 1964 and I just assumed it had always been that.

BTCS 1974-94. Tin cans all the way. Shellback, blue nose, and a few other initiations I won't mention. Mike Boorda was my skipper on the USS Farragut. Quite the odd one. Had all of B division restricted to the ship for 24 hrs upon our return from a med cruise because both fire rooms dropped the load (fires out), due to fuel oil service pumps cavitating during rough seas on the way home. Some time ago I learned that he took his own life soon after he was promoted to Secretary of the Navy. Something to do with wearing ribbons he never earned. He didn't tolerate anything less than perfection. So much so that it cost him his life. Sad.
