It's not nonsense. Even as a child I wondered about Aunt Jemima and how this made African Americans feel. All these little things add up to the weight that breaks the backs of a people.

I suppose the same way Caucasians may wonder about Little Debbie and Colonel Sanders?
Just a guess, same as yours.

I wonder if immigrants from Ghana, or any other African country have negative thoughts to black faces on American products? I doubt it. Many of them do not understand the anger that black Americans feel as to them, this is a country to be grateful for the opportunity it offers that they'd never have where they'd lived before. White immigrants feel the same way, especially the ones from socialist and communist countries.

NO......it’s leftist like you that are convincing the blacks by shaming them into believing that there is something wrong with being successful, she is, and should be a proud part of American history.....

Did you really wonder about that as a child?

I didn't then, and don't really do so now. I think we have much more important matters to worry about.

Same is true with statues that are being removed. It’s just part of history. What About all the mistresses MLK had, should we remove ALL THE MLK street signs and road signs he was not a good image for our young people. Black or white! Just saying.

You might want to ask an old "Southerner" (a term which is also offensive, by the way) before you expose your ignorance concerning our customs.

"Aunt" and "Uncle", when not applied to relatives, are informal titles denoting endearment, respect, and acceptance as part of the extended family, used by the children or when speaking to the children about their elder.

Adults of the same generation may address each other as "Sister" or "Brother" to denote familial acceptance, whether the parties are related or not.

In either case, neither age nor skin tan has anything to do with it.

"Mr." and "Mrs." are formal titles given to anyone you meet, until their preferred title is discovered.

In most places, they are used when they have no title.

There are still places where, if they have no other title, they are addressed by their occupation, similar to the custom in the Middle Ages.

Thus, you might have "Mayor Johnston", Colonel Higgenbotham, Head Dog-Catcher Smith, Assistant Grave-Digger Jones, Pastor Germano, Town Drunk Hester, etc.

At all times, the complete title is used, no matter how cumbersome and EVERYONE is assigned a title.

There are fewer and fewer places, today, that still follow this practice, but there are a few.

"Mr.", "Mrs." or "Miss", followed by the first name is an acceptable form of informal address by children towards an elder who is neither part of the family nor accorded the title of "Aunt" or "Uncle".

Thus, "Uncle Bob" is part of the family, while "Mr. George" is not.

Only trusted people from outside the family are ever granted the title of "Aunt" or "Uncle".

Any slave (one of which there hasn't been in this country for over 150 years) called "Aunt" or "Uncle" had special status, accepted as a member of the family.

Trivia for the Day:

The proper designation for a person from the South-Eastern section of the United States once called "Dixie" is "American" - without any stinking hyphen.

You're welcome.

Note: The above two sentences immediately prior to this one are hereby clearly labeled as the subtle sarcasm characteristic of this section of the country that indicates a state of being aware of an insult and dismissing it as unworthy of notice - in case you missed its significance.

You might want to ask an old "Southerner"... (show quote)

Bless you for this. It is in all the hearts of we in the South but not said as eloquently as you put it. Likewise, it is killing all of us to see the monuments to our ancestors splattered with paint and pulled to the ground by POS's that have no respect for any thing or anyone. We tried to tell America that if they came for the Lee and Jackson statues today they would come for the Lincoln and 54th Mass USCT murals some day. Well, guess what? They came for them!

MLK was assassinated roughly five years after JFK was. Back then, a person’s reputation was built on his public life only. We won’t be renaming the MLK streets any more than we rename the schools named after JFK, let alone the spaceport located at Cape Canaveral.

Actually, Sanders and Debbie McKee are real people. Not sure what my point is here. Just saying.

So the term "Uncle Tom" is a term of endearment? Not in the south I was born and raised in.

Let’s not talk about “back then”. You’ll loose every time.

Really, love selective outrage. So do we regard Washington and Jefferson for their remarkable contributions to this nation built on their “public life”. Or destroy their reputation, memory, and monuments because they participated in personal behavior (slavery) that was unfortunately practice worldwide at the time. Tearing down one monument is not going to make one poor urban life better. Undoing 50 years of well intentioned but failed “Great Society” policies that have done more to propagate cycles of dependency and cultural poverty than anything else, period!

Actually, the rioters are already demanding that schools named after Washington and Jefferson be renamed. They want anything commemorating something that happened more than a month ago taken down. They have no sense of (or regard for) History, and they are doomed to repeat the mistakes that were made long ago.
