Was watching the latest improvements in Photoshop June update and saw the pattern section of the Blending Options section. Decided to play around using my flower shot I took last week.
Here are my steps if you are interested.
1) Open file
2) Duplicate file for new layer
3) Right click inside layer bar to open Blend Options
4) Inside Blend Options clicked on Pattern Overlay
5) Click inside Pattern: box
Now you have lots of things to choose from. In mine I picked the last box in the first section that shows diagonal black lines. Blend mode to Normal, Opacity 70%, angle 0, Scale 13%. Click OK
6) Go to you firs base layer and make a mask for the main flower. Apply that mask to layer 2, The one with the lines.
7) Make a duplicate layer of this layer with the mask. Now we will call it layer 3. Turn OFF this layer
8) Click on layer 2 and right click and rasterize the layer. Not sure why but the lines although lighter still show up on the main flower. Will fix that in step 10
9) Apply Gaussian blur to this layer #2 set at 19 pixels
10) Click on and hold the mask on layer 3, Option/alt then drag it down to layer 2. This will clean up any lines going through the main flower.
That's it you're done.
When you applied the Gaussian Blur the black lines blurred making the background darker. If you want to lighten the back ground change the opacity in layer 2
Excellent results, Jim. Thanks for the tutorial.

Both the DL and DDL, Jim.
Interesting! So many toys, so little time.
A cool new tool! I like the way it makes the flower really pop from the background. Thanks for sharing.
