Nice of the rattler to alert you that cacti were in the trail. Thanks for sharing the photo.
I had never heard a rattler before, as big as he was, the rattle was not that loud.

Only one noise if you have a snake charmer.
Not many charmers around that area.

Not my style, wouldn't give one houseroom - body shot to anchor, one or two to take the head off entire. Can't let the dogs be victims of dead venomous reptile reflex.
Thanks for your input. I guess that happens sometimes.

You wouldn't want to step on one of these guys.
It made me wish I had worn my boots rather than tennis shoes.
Great shot, I think my walking there would be very short trips!

I am with you completely. I don't like snakes anyway but at least don't kill them all anymore. But any rattlesnake I see when I have a firearm or a hiking stick is dead. I almost stepped on one at the Custer Battlefield Monument a few years back. No gun and no stick so I gave him a wide berth and walked past. Had I had a hiking stick I would have killed it too. Any dog or small child would have stepped right next to it as it was right at the edge of the trail.

On DDL I note abundant evidence of camera shake. If this were my photo the camera shake would have rendered the snake too blurry to ID as a snake. Of Course if this were my photo, I wouldn't have taken it because the loud sound quixdraw is talking about would be me rapidly leaving the scene
Nice shot. Has quite a few rattles.
Were you what got this guy so excited ??? Great shot of a fully agitated diamondback. I guess he was saying "Don't Tread On Me."
Best rig for shooting rattlers:
12 gauge & #9 shot!
They are protected in Arizona, just like the snakes in the State Capitol.
-Just got back from a couple of days fishing at a friends small ranch (3,000 acres) near Carrizo Springs, probably close to where you were. This is where everything either sticks, stings or bites.
Only saw two rattlers. Really have to watch your step!!
I'm still more than 100 miles south of where you were. I've crossed paths with a few rattler's, snakes are usually elected officials.
