The myth of Lincoln is strong ... but a myth nonetheless.

Lincoln didn’t free the slaves.

Lincoln wasn’t for equality, he was for exporting freed slaves.

Honest Abe was an insult because he lied all the time.

Lincoln had some legislators arrested for disagreeing with him.

Lincoln signed off on the greatest war crime in US history.

Lincoln shuttered anti Lincoln newspapers.

Lincoln was a tyrant.

The myth of Lincoln arose because he was assassinated.

Understand it, if you can.

If you can’t, read a book.

Are you saying that your short list balances the 800,000 Americans who died in the civil war?

I'm aware of Lincoln's history. But people change. The Emancipation proclamation signifies the substantial change in theory of the war from one of States rights to Anti-slavery.

You also have to remember that during a civil war Lincoln had the power to use martial law. And preserving the U.S. as a single country was a morally pragmatic thing to do, I think most would agree especially as we look back at it in hindsight. Imagine what Lincoln struggled with without that hindsight.

I'm editing this post to add the fact that Lincoln's reconstruction plan, had he lived, could have made all the difference with respect to the Jim Crow period we had to endure, too.

When will we 'get past' systemic discrimination, aka 'affirmative action?'

Most of my career was afflicted by Affirmative Action. I was passed over several times because of my "white privileged skin tone" for less qualified and experienced women and minorities. In one instance I could have ended up in CA in the film industry. I did launch a law suit, but it's a long story and here I am, still in Detroit.

Why should we just stop at what the progressives want to remove.

Wasn't that a great city at one time, what happened to it?

Remember four score and 20 years ago? If you count the actual adoption of the Constitution it was about 15 years less than that that we fought a war to correct the defect of slavery in that document. That was in less than one persons lifetime that 500,000 people died (overwhelmingly white people) to ban slavery and live up to our principle of equality under law. You can't say this country is not trying.

A whole lot of those people died to save slavery, and haven’t yet given up.

Not sure what Philando Castille did to get on your list twice, but pretty good post.

You really shouldn’t have done that. He makes enough noise without any encouragement.

Huh?

I'm sorry. I must have misunderstood when you said "Lincoln would Not say that racism is still systemic in this country." because we had elected a black president.....

My answer pointed out that racism still exists in this country (and is getting more prominent because of the racist pink porker in the WH). The names were a few of a much longer list of black people killed for no reason by police in this country just in the last year or so, which is proof of that racism.

However many people died in the Civil War, could you explain to me why you compared that number with a few names of blacks who have died from police brutality? Perhaps you are saying that the blacks that have been brutalized by the police are unimportant because of the number of people who died in the Civil War. No, that makes no sense...

again...Huh?
