I think you are dreaming if you think they have a better healthcare system than the US. We've all heard the stories of people having to bring their own bandages, bedsheets and antibiotics with them to the hospitals. The maximum legal salary is $20 per month. How does anyone live on that? That's a princely sum that adds up to 67 cents per hour. Every neighborhood has their own community stooge that keeps watch to make sure no one is doing anything subversive like speaking against the government. I'm not sure you actually believe the stuff you are saying. Maybe you work for the Cuban government.

This story (https://nationalpost.com/opinion/michael-j-totten-an-eyewitness-account-of-cubas-shocking-wretchedness) was written in 2014 so it's fairly recent. I don't believe what you say. It can't be that in less than six years living conditions in Cuba have changed that much. How much does the regime pay you to repeat its phony propaganda?

The story, is just that, a story. It is 6 years old. It certainly is not recent. You don't have to believe what I say, but things have changed. The health care system is very good.

How dare you ask how much they pay me. You need to be educated before you post this *fake news*

We went last year and it was wonderful . I would recommend a private tour guide . He took us where we wanted to go and also recommended other sites . We found a lot of sites we went to parking was difficult and we had to park and walk but it was worth it .
Enjoy .

It is not the same now. I have been there 3 times since 2013 and each time I see a difference in the people and what they have. Most have cell phones, and in almost all the parks there is wifi.

Yes, many may have cell phones and WiFi, but they don't have FREEDOM. In contrast to a number of the posts in this thread (and people here certainly have the right to state their opinions), I guarantee you no one in Cuba is posting anti-regime messages on a blog somewhere. No one.

Your story is rather consistent with the first video that I listed in my earlier post. The video I posted is only 4 months old.

I have never been there, and would love to have your impressions.
I would be booking an Airbnb room and checking out local day photographing workshops.
Please give me any tips you can.
One last thing i would be going solo and the possible safety factor is always an issue.
thanks
I would be flying out of sfo

US & Cuba relations are in a constant state of flux. My friend goes there often under the journalist criteria. He had some minor problems on His last visit, & his female friend was locked up for no reason, but soon released. I would heed the advice that the other Hoggers have posted. Personally, I would love to make the trip myself; I'm about 180 miles away. However travel and flight restrictions have prevented my adventure for now. I would wait to see the state of affairs in place when you plan to travel, as opposed to making advanced plans.

i have been advised to change to Canadian currency before going. It is simpler to convert & less likely to be confiscated.

You are a very ignorant, close minded person.
Because I love to travel, and love to photograph, I should limit myself to only countries I want to live in.
How stupid is that.

I never said it was paradise. You and your fake news said that.
I never said I wanted to live there, again your fake news.

I did say I love the people I have met there, I have an ongoing relationship with the team there. I love to visit, continue to photograph and document the changes. There are many changes. Yes there are poor people, we have poor people in the US. They have wealthy people, we have wealthy people. Yes it is a communist country, but right now we have our very owner dictator, at least he thinks so.

You need to open your mind and your heart to people, not be so judgmental nor mean.

I purposely did not insert US politics into the discussion because it is irrelevant.

I did not say that communist countries do not have beautiful scenery, interesting cultural artifacts or interesting or kind people. Indeed great photographers have have made notable images of people struggling to survive.

You can travel where you want and photograph what you want. The local government may differ considerably from my opinion however.

I lived with Cuban exiles for 4 years and learned their stories of horror.

I spent a few years learning the languages of two communist countries and the culture and practices of folks in communist countries. My Professors were exiles from the countries.

I have helped, usually, in small ways a number of folks escape communism and have dear friends that are exiles. I have heard their stories of bravery and horror.

I lived, albeit in privileged condition, in communist countries for about 2 years of my life. I learned and saw much of the human misery, poverty and death imposed by government on real people. I learned the difference between the show places intended for visitors and the conditions of the regular people. I was in their homes and saw with my own eyes. I listened to their stories.

I don't need to read the news -fake or otherwise. I have seen with my eyes.

Communism brings poverty, misery and death.

I suggest it is you that needs an education. You cannot get it on Long Island.

Check the state department on the rules. You have to be in a certain category to go there. Trump changed the rules last year. Not so easy anymore.

You will have to change $ to tourist pesos, make sure your $ have no marks on them like writing or edge marks from atms, also ragged bills will not be accepted you can change back to $ on way out, locals will take $ but risky for them. Nice people and great old cars. Enjoy
