The second slot can be used for jpeg if you want to shoot RAW and jpg. It can be used to accept the overflow if you exceed the first card's capacity. It can be used to store pix by subject matter or location etc etc. There are countless uses the second slot can be used for.

XQD is significantly more expensive and a poor excuse of why to use one for reliability. I've been shooting digital since the late 90's and never had a card fail.

Your statement about doubling the failure rate is hooey, at best. It is illogical and absurd silliness to say two card slots are a waste.

Lets just say I have a Master’s degree in Engineering and worked in reliability.

I believe one slot will normally still work if the other has failed. These day, two slots are a waste only in that it provides redundancy unneeded by most of us.

Redundancy is only one of the many uses the second slot can be used for. Read my post again or use your imagination to think of multiple uses.
Some people see no use for a DSLR cuz their phone is good enough. If you fall into either category that's fine by me because I take advantage of all useful tools and if you don't, that's your decision, as limited as it may be.

I delayed buying a D500 for over a year because it doesn't have a pop-up flash. Big mistake. The truth is that there are very few lenses that do not create a visible shadow in the field when the pop up flash is used at typical indoor focal lengths. And there are a whole host of good solutions if you really do need a small flash. (I have found two nice used SB400 flashes that ride just fine in a pocket and a small extender to raise them up a bit. No shadows.)

As for the articulating screen, the owner of my local repair shop loves them. He told me that failures related to the articulating screen represent just over 50% of his entire repair business. As for memory cards, here is a Copy/Paste from NikonUSA's website:

That's funny Larry. I've had a used D500 for a few months now and didn't realize that it didn't have a flash. Shows how much I use the flash . Funny thing is I also have a D750 and was going to upgrade to a D780 until I realized that it didn't have a built-in flash and I couldn't add a battery grip. Maybe the D790 will have it all!

Do you think you are the only one here on UHH with an engineering background?

The conversation about two slots vs one, as is true with most conversations in our culture today, involves more emotion than science.

No. But clearly in this conversation.

I have never had a second slot, and have never missed one,
Users of the Z series may also never miss one.
That is all I am saying.

I had two slots in my D800. I kept a card in the CF slot but never used it. The most likely use would have been if I left the camera bag behind and forgot to put the SD card back in after uploading. That never happened...in part because I always check the battery before going out with the camera and it would have told me no card.

You don’t know anything about me so your statement has no meaning.

My experience is that smart people don’t have to tell anyone because it’s obvious they are smart. But for some reason you feel inclined to tell people. 🤔

Yep. Some cameras have one slot others have two. For some people two slots is important. Others not so much.

But the D780 has two slots which is what OP was asking about.

The other controversial change we are seeing today is the elimination of the pop-up flash. I miss that little feature. I didn’t use it a lot, but it was handy on occasion, mostly for portraits. For example to add fill to a backlit outdoor portrait or when inside.

How did photographers survive with one slot?
Prior to 2004 pros could not use digital cameras due to lack of card slots.
Do not give me crap about 2 cameras.
You can only use one at a time and thus not get the same photo on the second camera if there was a failure.

How many card failures have you experienced thus far?

I was wondering if some of you folks have purchased the 780 yet and whats your opinion of it.

I have a little GAS problem and could use some help. Nikon has a sale right now and the 780 is priced pretty close to the 750.

Thanks,

I like mine. I also have a D750 (sitting idle)]
