You clearly do not know what you are talking about. It may have been a brutal regime in the past, but it is no longer that way. It is safer, kinder and may even have less corruption than we have in the USA!!!
Right now in this country, it is so much worse than Cuba.

The *for the* is not supporting the government. You need to educate yourself if you are going to post.

Sorry if I offended you roni, please accept my most humble apology....but I am not uneducated nor am I ignorant about world affairs. Living in Florida I do have many Cuban acquaintances and friends and I would never, ever consider Cuba over America, no matter what.....Cheers and safe journeys.

I do think that many Cubans living in Florida have very different feelings about Cuba. Many left their homes & businesses under a brutal regime. It is not the same now. I have been there 3 times since 2013 and each time I see a difference in the people and what they have. Most have cell phones, and in almost all the parks there is wifi.

I was not saying I would consider Cuba over America. I am saying I hate what is happening in this country under this president. I live in NY, he was not well liked before his presidency. He didn't pay the workers building his buildings, he tried to sell us Trump water, a Trump university, a womanizer, a man connected with Jeffery Epstein. The list goes on. He is a horrible person and a horrible president. He has divided this country. When the non political generals come out against him. There is a huge problem in this country.

Yes, there is a huge problem in this country: the fake news media that brainwashes you with constant derogatory stuff (not news).

You won’t get that in Cuba.

Cuba, Cuba, Cuba....Sorry, its not about whether you like Trump or not or as someone else put it, the orange clown. His post became totally irrelevant when he said that, yours is about the same. Hard to have a rational conversation with one who is experiencing so much political hate and spews irrational talking point after talking point.

As for those who left Cuba, they (private citizens and businesses) left because everything they had was outright STOLEN from them and never compensated to this day. Those that didn't leave were murdered or imprisoned and all their property confiscated. ALL private property was taken by the government and is now just starting to become a reality again. Well we know the history and its still similar. Enjoy, have fun on your next trip to Cuba roni...Sayonara

Went to Cuba several years ago, and was in the Museum of the Revolution at the same time that Fidel relinquished power to Raul a few hundred meters down the street.

It's a fascinating place, and one of the highlights was a day-long birding trip outside of Havana (my wife and I were the only customers). We were fortunate to visit and stay with a friend/reporter who knew the inside ropes, of which there are many. Overall, however, a terrific trip.

If all you say it true, the trip is too risky. Why would one want to be in that danger?

I was there in January with the Ronichas group. It is not risky at all when you are with a knowledgeable guide.

planning a possible trip for the end of the year.
I have never been there, and would love to have your impressions.
I would be booking an Airbnb room and checking out local day photographing workshops.
Please give me any tips you can.
One last thing i would be going solo and the possible safety factor is always an issue.
thanks
I would be flying out of sfo

After reading all these responses, I'm sure I could find at least 1,000 places I would prefer going to and photographing before going to Cuba!

As an American you are free to go where you please. I am sure the violent dictator has prepared a few places where they can strip you of as many dollars as they can.

Many years ago I lived in the Cuban community in Miami. I heard many horrific stories of what happened to people and their family members. One fellow was in the Cuban Navy. Somewhere in the Straits of Florida he jumped ship and swam to Florida where he restarted is engineering education. A lady who worked with my wife and her brother escaped from Cuba. Shortly after arriving in Florida their parents died. They took care of themselves from the age of 12.

Later, I traveled in Communist countries in Europe. I saw many good people being starved and otherwise deprived. I was constantly under observation by the secret police. (you get good at spotting them). Sometimes the surveillance begins upon entering the airplane in New York City. On my last visit to Romania on the eve of the revolution against Ceausescu, the temperature in my room was 10C. The only food in the restaurant was mămăligă, a dish similar to polenta made from corn meal but a bit better. I was in the BEST hotel in Romania. Only special guests stayed there. The hotel was in deluxe neighborhood. Folks were wearing fur coats inside their homes. It was usual for folks to have gas and hot water for only a few hours 3 times a week. There was no electricity in the hallways. I recall feeling my way up the stairs and along hallways counting doors.

I also supported for a short time someone escaping communism. This person is a successful professional now.

A couple of YouTube videos from recent travelers may be of interest.

If you are not an experienced traveler in the third world, I would not travel solo. A group is a must.

If anyone who thinks that Cuba is paradise on Earth, trade places with a Cuban. Both can thus be in paradise.
Communism brings poverty, misery and death.

I totally disagree, you clearly do not know what you are talking about. They have better health care than many in the USA have, they have less hostile police officers and the people of Cuba are friendly, trusting and so much more loving than the people in the USA. Especially at this time in our dark times.

Maybe if you opened your eyes, and were more tolerant you would understand. The dollars that are given to the people in this team have given them much more. They are so appreciative, yes they have taxes. The drivers all pay a heavy tax to the government. But we Americans pay lots to our government that is run by big business and corrupt officials.

I think you are dreaming if you think they have a better healthcare system than the US. We've all heard the stories of people having to bring their own bandages, bedsheets and antibiotics with them to the hospitals. The maximum legal salary is $20 per month. How does anyone live on that? That's a princely sum that adds up to 67 cents per hour. Every neighborhood has their own community stooge that keeps watch to make sure no one is doing anything subversive like speaking against the government. I'm not sure you actually believe the stuff you are saying. Maybe you work for the Cuban government.

This story (https://nationalpost.com/opinion/michael-j-totten-an-eyewitness-account-of-cubas-shocking-wretchedness) was written in 2014 so it's fairly recent. I don't believe what you say. It can't be that in less than six years living conditions in Cuba have changed that much. How much does the regime pay you to repeat its phony propaganda?
