Most consider manually focusing as turning the lens <focus> barrel, not pressing the button half way to activate the camera's auto-focus system.

Yes that is true. I was referring to focusing manually after autofocusing.
If I auto focus with my AF-S lens set on AF and my camera set on AF, and then I want to focus a little more, I can override auto focus and turn the barrel to achieve more focus. I only can do this with the AF-S lens while my shutter is half pressed. If I totally manually focus with the lens and camera set on manual then I don't need to half press the shutter.

Here's a useful Back Button AutoFocus guide created by Steve Perry which I've used to set up both my Nikon Df and D850 for BBAF... Now I prefer back button focusing versus using the shutter button.

To clarify the book you linked to is for mirrorless Nikon cameras. There is another different book for non-mirrorless Nikon cameras. Potential buyers should be careful to order the correct one.

Yes I read Steve Perry's response. I also downloaded the guide. It has 33 pages of information..
