You are right in that we don't have a massive centralized govt. or a socialistic govt. which can force us to sacrifice ourselves for the "greater good". At least not under Conservatives. The U.S. is a nation of individuals who act in their own self interest, similar to how capitalism works. It has proven to be the best and freest form of government in world history.

Not picking a side. Just answering your questions. He does not develop vaccine but does provide funding for research. The economy was not on the brink when he took office. Stock reports you mention will show that the brink was when George W left office. Yes, everyone dies. We have doctors and medical researchers that try to extend life. That’s why we have them. Right now they recommend wearing masks in public to help Stop the spread and extend life until a vaccine is developed. We were both in the military. Weren’t we both taught to lead by example?

Well said, and on the topic of leading by example, Trump is a miserable failure. Who does he inspire, except those who would follow him anywhere anyway? Fortunately that number will be nowhere near what it once was in November. Want to know what real leadership is in a crisis? I'm reading Erik Larson's book about Churchill during the blitz. That's inspiring. Trump is just embarrassing.

I believe you can be a patriot and not care for the person in charge. That’s why we vote. If you supported President Obama you are indeed a patriot, otherwise a bigot.

In 2017 the US had 45,000,000 flu cases. 2,000,000 doesn't seem that bad.

When you think of a person leading by example there are few, if any, better than Winston Churchill.

Who really cares about the number of cases!? It is the number of deaths that is of concern.

How has PRESIDENT Trump failed? Has he failed to develop a vaccine? I thought the doctors were supposed to do that. Has he failed to bring the economy back from the brink? Look at the stock reports.
People are dying? Every one who has been born will die. PRESIDENT Trump is supposed to stop that?
Get a grip!

How can you even mention Trump and Churchill in the same paragraph? Winston must be flipping in his grave!?

What you are really saying is that you and we won't know how many cases until some time in the future. It may be far in the future. Covid hasn't gone away. And the experts at the CDC are expecting a dramatic rise in cases as we come to the Fall-Winter seasons.

The accounting for any epidemic/pandemic never happens until sometime after the events have passed. COVID-19, including MERS and SARS, Influenza (all types), even Polio, are at best estimated. As I mentioned UC Berkley and Stanford used extrapolation to come up with their estimated counts.

Right now, 100 years after the 1918 pandemic, no one knows just how many cases or deaths happened. Scientists don't even know where it started, or even if it was/wasn't dormant prior to the break out. Estimates of deaths remain between 50 million and 100 million. Take a number like that to your boss for some other use, and find out what he'd do. We like to think we have a technology advantage, but everything reported is a statistical estimation. No one ever had a real handle on Polio. Yes, two vaccines developed, but there's also a body of evidence that herd and social immunity would have decimated the virus anyway.

There's been a huge demand for testing, but to what extent? Okay, you've tested folks. What then? You can't do anything but prepare reports. Those aren't good for anything but moot debates. The event is in the past, and will never be repeated. We're not in a closed system. Too much opportunity for viruses to get away from any type of control. We live in an open environmental system.

The point on which I would disagree with you, is about the forecast by CDC. Prior epidemics of COVID-type outbreaks have been one, then nearly done. Influenza is another beast all together.

Interesting. Seems to be in-line with most networks. I will be sure to pay more attention to BBC for an unbiased view.
