You Americans forget the difference between the US and the UK (and most other countries by the way). The UK is a single country with a single government and when it says to do something generally people do it. As it happens if the govt doesn't say the right things at the right time then you get chaos which they did.
Now the US is a collection of individual states which runs loosely as a federation under the US federal govt. So there are heaps of things where there is a distinct lack of clarity between who does what and why. eg you try and get a prescription filled in a different state than where it was issued. So you already have chaos built in.
And to add to that you have some issues in the constitution (freedom of speech etc) which complicates various responses.
So you have a central govt that maybe wants to do the right thing BUT you have so many other things working against that with an end result that it is impossible for anybody to act for the greater good. Trump is just a side issue and not even worth discussing in this context. I do have to add that I feel you also have a lot of people who are incapable of understanding what the greater good even is. Hence wandering about without masks or social distancing is a selfish response to the greater good. And who am I to criticize any of you if you are determined to commit suicide or even moving the US into an also ran position.
This virus is real. It can and does kill you. If you recover you have a good chance that you will end up with lifetime health issues. And still you wander about as if nothing was going on.
And before anybody gets stuck into me I do feel for the issues you have with police brutality. This is an ongoing problem, it has been there for decades, and nobody has yet decided to actual fix it. But unfortunately now is not the time to attempt it. In 50 years time they will look back (not that this is any issue for all those currently participating in this craziness because you will all be dead) but it sure as hell will be an issue for your grandchildren. They will wonder what on earth were those old bastards even thinking since they helped screw up such a calamitous time.

Nothing gives the impression of superiority quite like beginning a sentence with "You Americans...." And yes, that freedom of speech and all those other rights can be such a bitch.

Over 2,000 Americans die from cancer each day and there are an untold number of new cases and thankfully those that are in remission each day as well.

If there was as much public concern about cancer as there is in COVID-19, which will eventually dwindle away as all flu virus has, perhaps a fast-track cure for cancer could have been a reality.

I personally do not know a single person that has died from the COVID-19 virus however I have had many friends and associates that have been touched by cancer.

It worries me though, that we are loosing that right of free speech, albeit selectively.

Ditto, here.

I've had four relatives, and several friends who have died from glioblastoma. It's an insidious brain cancer which is seldom detectable until stage IV.

The ongoing problem with cancer, it seems, is the early detection that's needed to fight it. And even if caught and excised, it's no guarantee that its gone. The fight is being waged at the DNA level, and that's where it will be won. Too many times, chemo and radiation therapies are countered by rapidly mutating cancer DNA, but medical science is advancing.

I think you need to catch a good whiff out of the O2 tank that you should be carrying around with you. It might clear your head a bit.
Do you mean PRESIDENT Trump hasn't gotten his hands dirty working on a vaccine? I guess he should have gone to medical school to be qualified to act as PRESIDENT of the U.S.
Like it or not, Wall Street IS the economy and we would all be dead without it.
Surprisingly, we agree on ONE point. I wish PRESIDENT Trump would divorce himself from twitter. It often back fires on him in the public eye. BUT, that's who he is and the way he does business. Who are you and I to expect him to change that?
And yes, he had my vote last time and he has it again this time around. And if it were possible and if he continues his good work I would vote for him a third time. But WAIT, he's a Republican. It's the demoncrats who cheat and scheme and lie and steal on election day.

The cure rate for cancer is improving dramatically and there are many research centers dedicated to finding a cure to the many different forms. While cancer is not contagious, COVID-19 is. Contagious diseases like polio, HIV etc get massive up front funding to stop the spread. Two different issues. The UN estimates 25,000 people die from starvation each day. That’s a hell of a lot easier to cure than cancer or COVID and yet it continues to happen.

As the adage goes, you can have your own opinion, but not your own facts.

Deaths from the influenza, COVID-19, etc, are reported as the number of deaths per TOTAL infections, not TOTAL REPORTED infections. Studies at accredited universities like Stanford and UC Berkley, among others, came up with similar numbers in separate studies which show infection rates 40X-50X reported infections. At the low end, the infection rate is 80,000,000, and the upper end 100,000,000.

Add to the above, that COVID-type viruses have difficulty penetrating after the 75% infection rate; they simply run out of the ability to infect. Herd immunity, natural body immunity, etc., all play a role.

What you are really saying is that you and we won't know how many cases until some time in the future. It may be far in the future. Covid hasn't gone away. And the experts at the CDC are expecting a dramatic rise in cases as we come to the Fall-Winter seasons.

...the medical particulars of which have never threatened to rapidly overwhelm the nation's healthcare system as did Covid-19.

Your point would be better taken if you said that -- now that we've endured Covid-19 and our healthcare system (excepting NYC) has not been overwhelmed -- it is now time to re-open, taking care to avoid second and third spikes that could overwhelm. Of course there will be further "waves" - can't be helped until we have vaccine or herd immunity - but we must ensure that the waves do not become spikes.

In the U.S. "the greater good" as you describe it goes by the name of "patriotism" which is out of fashion in this country by the Left. You can use your crying towel for the absence of that now.

You are right in that we don't have a massive centralized govt. or a socialistic govt. which can force us to sacrifice ourselves for the "greater good". At least not under Conservatives. The U.S. is a nation of individuals who act in their own self interest, similar to how capitalism works. It has proven to be the best and freest form of government in world history.

Only 2 million? I wish it was 200 million. Herd Immunity. Number of positive tests is not a concern, only the number of deaths
