I broke my left arm 3 weeks ago and the doctor said I dont need surgery, but if not I might not be able to lift my arm all the way straight up over my head. I just hope I can lift it high enough to support the lens. Not in the mood for surgery since I had double knee replacement 11/25. Finally healing and paying off left over bills. Maybe I'll need to use my monopod.
Ask if it makes sense to look into physical therapy. I have paid for one session after injuries couple of times and done the exercises on my own after that. Found it both affordable and helpful.

I couldn't endorse Physical Therapy more! Get real specific with your Doc. No fun, either way.
I couldn't move near as well as I do if it weren't for some wonderful physical therapists. Those folks are the miracle workers.

My opinion, strongly consider the doctors advice, maybe get 2-3 other medical specialist Orthopedic Doctors advice. No one enjoys surgery, it can be Risky, it can be good or bad, so it does come down to a personal choice. I broke my Wrist in a fall down the stairs 2 years ago, they set it in the Emergency room, put me out first. But suggested I see a specialist, which I did, and he told me I should have it surgically repaired due to the extensive damage, more than just a broken Bone, but it will heal ok, but I may lose some movement, and possible feeling. So, I opted to have the surgery, glad I did. I saw x-rays and scans from before and after surgery, he explained everything he did so my wrist, fingers would work properly again. I am glad I chose to have the Surgery. But it is a personal choice for each individual. Hope you Heal well friend.
P.S. I was 67 years old, now 69 years old, and personally glad took my doctors advice. I also had 3 months of Physical Therapy too, GOOD INSURANCE.
When I was in my 30's I fractured my elbow.
The orthopedic surgeon said I will never be able to elbow fully again.
Well after the cast came off, he was right.
I could not open my arm straight out any more.
So I went home and started doing curls using a one pound weight.
HURT LIKE HELL!
Hours and hours of curls, slowly increasing the weight paid off.
I could open my elbow like before I fractured it.
When I had a followup visit he asked how thing were going.
So I showed him.
The look on his face was priceless!
He said in all the years of surgery, including surgery on professional athletics
he's never seen anybody recover like I did.
So when your cast comes off do your best at moving your arm again.
The rewards for fighting through the pain are worth it.
Good luck.
A good physical therapist!
Hope you mend fast and well.

Like you I plan to use weights and exercise. The doctor said I would be able to move my arm in other directions just maybe not all the way above my head. I'll have to be careful to not get arrested.
