I have, use and love a IIIf. Have never had the lens get stuck on camera (yet!). But, if I do, I will thank you in advance for this idea on loosening (the freezer, not the WD40).
Actually, used effectively the reverse idea once to loosen a filter stuck on lens. Heated a Cloth (wash rag) in microwave. Used it to grasp just the filter, as tried to unscrew. Filter came right off, as the heat expanded it just enough.

It was a joke, of course.

As I posted under the topic: “Shooting Film,” I’ve started using my Leica IIIf. I thought it might be a good idea to check and clean the rear element on the equally vintage Elmar 50mm, f/3.5 lens. As I’m sure most of you know that Leica has a screw mount. Couldn’t get the lens to budge. As I so often do when faced with a perplexing issue, I resorted to the internet. I found lots of opinions as to how to get the lens off. I was about to give up when I found a post on Photo.net from 1/1/2011, by Theodore Bell, who suggested putting the camera in the freezer for 15 minutes. Said it had worked for him; he opined that the metals in the base of the lens and the lens mount were different enough to have different coefficients of thermal expansion and that this might be enough to free the lens. Tried it—worked like a charm. I swear you could learn how to do neurosurgery on the internet.

Putting a lens with a stuck filter in the freezer also works great.

I have similar Leica but never had a frozen problem like yours. Once a while I took it out and unscrew the Summitar. Have fun with the camera for a few minutes. This should keep it in good condition.

Leica IIIf, 50mm Elmar 3.5 Kodachrome ASA 10, year 1952. I was a junior in high school at the family hunting lease when I caught up with three REAL cowboys.

I praise & use WD-40 for many things, but never cameras! It is a penetrant and goes where it will.

Plus, I hate the smell, which permeates everything and lasts forever. I used a couple of tiny drops of Camillia oil to lube the lens mount and threads, as well as the aperture and focus rings. This oil was used by the samurai to keep their swords from rusting and it is a favorite of fine woodworkers to protect vintage tools. It is odorless and doesn’t become sticky.

Did you shoot with it? I did a lot with my IIIf. I did mostly Kodachrome slides and many of them were wonderful. I still have most of them. Need to scan them someday.

I used it for several years, B&W for me, mainly street photography and that was 50 years ago. Used to do my own processing. Wound up trading it in for an M3. Wish I had both of them now.
