Hi I got a canon 5d about 1 month ago it takes fine pictures but the viewfinder seams not as bright as some of my other canon cameras it this normal since this is the first time I got a full frame camera I have tried different lenses and different batteries it must be the camera the pictures come out fine it's just something about the viewfinder . has any of you had a 5d and experienced the same thing ? It’s not uncommon to find an “s” screen in an early 5-series. If the custom settings have not been wiped you can check the menu. Even if the prior owner put one in and neglected to set the menu there would be two clues:
1. The screen actually focuses.
2. If the menu is not set for “s” then the screen will cause about 1 stop overexposure.

My own 5D2 has an “s” screen and is dimmer to the eye.

Read some general tutorials on SLRs. Your idea of associating SLR brightness with batteries says you need that.

Well, the old 5D is now well into its second decade of life, so there’s all sorts of possible reasons for a “dim viewfinder”... including just good old fashioned dust? Do you know the last time it was professionally cleaned? That might be a starting point, although of course it’s maybe not financially good sense to have a professional cleaning done on a body worth maybe a few hundred dollars? Only you can decide.

If the dolphin image was intended to demonstrate some aspect of the camera's performance, you need to store the file so the image details, including EXIF data, can be viewed.

I purchased a new Canon 5D many years ago and never ever had any problems with the viewfinder.

My 5D2 is also aging gracefully but every time I happen to use it I’m initially a bit shocked by that dimmer view sceeen.

I believe that's what they call a run-on sentence.😉

You might want to go to clear setting, clear the settings and start over.

Hi, Have you tried to clean the peep hole into the viewfinder? On my 5D MIV I found some fine dust on this will make it seem dim. Or, clean inside the camera prism block or the actual mirror. Depending on your exposure, and speed the image looks good. Just do as suggested check the "store original" block so the "hogs" can see your actual camera settings to be sure.
