Simplicity is often more beautiful than fancy stuff. This is a real attention grabbing shot.

That's lovely. I'm wondering if it's intended to be permanent or temporary.

Thank you all those that have commented. Interesting as to permanent or temporary grave marker and I wondered the same thing. Birch will last a surprising amount of time as the bark is waterproof and contains a natural fungicide. That said I would think it would need replacing every couple of years. I could have moved the blade of grass from the little cherub figures face but declined to do so out of respect. I did not feel any right to move even a blade of grass, clearly getting soft in my old age.

There are some very old graves and some fairly recent ones, another which peaked my interest is a cast iron marker just pushed into the ground yet has endured since Phoebe Simmons passed in December 1893. In our fast moving sometimes-unfriendly world, this place is a little island of peace and love.

I have posted Phoebe's marker for interest, and sometimes wonder what her life would have been like living in such a small rural community back then.

Thanks again for looking and commenting all greatly appreciated.

Nicely done! One does wonder who the cross is for, though.

Hi Brian, hope you are keeping well and safe. This is Sotterley Chapel just down the road. http://www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/sotterleychapel.htm

Indeed as there are no other clues. In some ways I think that's part of the appeal as whoever placed it cares not that others know just as long as they know. I took these images may 2019 so would be interesting to know if the little birch cross is still there.

In a small chapel, in a very small Suffolk village, is a grave marker so very basic but so powerful and full of love. Image (1) The lane leading to the village, (2) The chapel, (3) The small but beautiful grave marker. All taken with my little Canon G1X which is my very light walk about gear.

There's a story for a "caring" eye.

Good evening EG,
Many thanks for the information. Sotterley is about 4 miles from me so I will visit soon.
I will see if the cross is still in place.
Stay safe and well.
Regards,
Brian.
