I searched the Hog for recent posts about Eneloop batteries and didn’t find any. Since this technology seems to change often I wanted to ask about your recent experience with these batteries.

I tried NiMH batteries back in the late 90’s/early 2000s and they were awful. They would self discharge so fast that you could not charge up your stock and expect them to have a useful charge a few weeks later. I had the PowerX batteries and a Maya MHC9000 charger.

My questions are as follows:

1. Are all NiMH batteries today created equal so long as the mah ratings are the same?
2. If no to question 1, which brands work the best.
2. Will my old maha MHC9000 work on the newer batteries or do I need to replace it? I see they still make the model, but I don’t know if it was upgraded since the newer technology came out.

I’m currently using Eveready
LIon batteries and would like to find something more wallet friendly. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Eneloop and or PowerEX IMO are the Best....unless I travel, then I buy whatever is at my destination to keep the baggage weight down.

For my applications, Eneloop Batts are the bomb, period.
They work in my high drain Canon 600EX RT flash very well. In fact, I have never had to change the flash batteries during a shoot. They also stay charged for long periods of time in storage. I have used a lot of different brands, but Eneloop AA, and AAA's work best for me (cost/benefit ratio). I even have adapters so that my AA's can be used in C & D applications and they do well.
Below is a site where you can see most AA rechargeable brands tested.

Are you sure they were nimh and not nicad's...
Nicads usually self discharge within a month.

I’m quite sure they were NiMH batteries. When NiMH batteries unseated NiCad batteries it was because they didn’t have as much problem with memory issues. But, they still self discharge very rapidly. The newer LSD batteries weren’t sold until about 2008. By that time I had given up on rechargeable batteries.

Eneloop batteries hold their charge for a really long time. These are the only rechargeable batteries I use now. I also use the Panasonic chargers.

Be available in a few days... seems to be the ticket. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

But to all - what version Eneloop are you using? Amazon has a White version, a Black version labeled Eneloop Pro, and a new Red version. The description for the Pro version says can be recharged only 500 times, the White 2000 times and the "new" Red version 2100 times. I must believe the ampacity is also different, but just curious what version you all are using.

I have had Powerworx batteries in the past, they are crap compared to an Eneloop.
For real life tests, go to youtube and search for Project Farm battery tests. One of the best testing channels out there.
I have a bunch of Eneloops dating back 15 years and the still work. The oldest are getting weak. My most recent purchase was the IKEA ladda batteries, The are excellent so far.

I have been using Eneloops for almost all my electronics and all camera gear, such as my canon speed lights my canon power packs, Electric shades ( they need 8 AA each) , and flashlights. I have never had one go bad. They hold charge when not being used and most important they don’t leak. I bought them on amazon and B&H photo and from time to time at Costco. They are cheaper over the long haul because you can recharge them hundreds of times.

According to this article in regards to photographic use... Powerex batteries are the clear winner.

Ordered a supply of Eneloop batteries about seven or eight years ago. Different sizes so I would have some for everything we owned. Have never had to buy a battery since. Never had one go bad or loose its charge in storage. I do open the container and top off the spares about once a year. Am totally satisfied.

I'll second that! Haven't had to buy a new battery since I got the Eneloop's. Both AA and AAA's.
One battery had fallen into a very hard to reach spot, right after it was charged. More than a year later my grandson managed to retrieve it. Checked the charge: still near full!

I use EBL for three stealth cams that I have. Have only had them about six months but they are still showing near a full charge. Price was good too from Amazon.

At one time in the beginning Sanyo made enloop battries. Now it’s Panasonic that makes them try looking under the new name.
