P1000 is massive and awkward compared to the small T series or even an SL2 or 3 which are lighter and smaller than most mirrorless. PS, Canon makes many superb bridge cameras as well but are not interchangable lens like the ones from Nikon or Panasonic thus would be a huge disappointment.
They will also use any lens the OP has which makes for a great grandfather-granddaughter time taking photos and sharing. Forms a real sharing bond and great teaching the love of photography.
Yes but we live 4 hours away. You make good points though... thanks.

You do visit?
My daughter was half the world away and wanted a camera like mine.
I got her the exact same camera and lens brand new and she still has it 40 years later and treasures it. It is not used, film, and do not blame her but she got what she wanted and not some cheap copy or lesser.
It was a Canon FTb so was not a top end camera but was what I had and she wanted one like it.
Everybody has an opinion. Here's mine.
It's for a 10 year old. Whatever you get, she will eventually grow out of it like she grows out of clothes. A simpler camera is both appropriate to her age and hand size. It will give her a lot to work with and learn. She probably won't outgrow the capabilities of a good bridge camera as her first until she has a few years of experience taking hundreds or thousands of pictures. Let her explore her world and photograph what is important to her. Is there a book/used book that explains the camera you want to gift her? Great package deal.
If she asks for help, feedback or to go on a photo shoot with you, you've got a buddy and budding photographer. If the gift is too complicated and confusing for a 10-11 year old, you might stifle her interest and enthusiasm.

It is silly to suggest anything besides a Canon seeing as the OP has Canon and she likes it and matches grandpa's and she can swap lenses when they are together forming a bond.

My grand daughter has been using my Canon Powershot SX280 HS.Last week I let her use my Canon T5i with 55-250 lens.....she loved it! I was thinking of getting her a Canon SX40. I think this would be a better choice with a fixed lens. A lot easier to work with and carry. She is a little peanut of a 10 year old. I found one at B&H for $100. I know its a 2011 but I thought this would be a starting place to see how she likes it. Any suggestions or comments would be great! I would like to keep the cost down. Thanks!

Wrong camera.
OP has Canon and that is what the granddaughter wants like grandfather's so when together they can bond through sharing lenses etc.
When my son was 10, he was using my interchangable lens camera and making stop motion films with his legos. He was always very careful with electronic equipment and took good care of his "toys". I got him a Cannon Rebel kit with 2 lenses and he is still using it today. He is 22 years old, saving for a mirrorless type camera. Don't underestimate what a 10 year old can do.
i am not suggesting you to get Fuji X-T3.but i am suggesting the gentleman to get this camera for his granddaughter.what is so so silly about that?. i am not going to call you silly for making this inappropriate remark because i was not raised that way except to suggest that you need some growing up to do.

How about she gets the T5i and you get a T7i or T8i when it comes out?
BTW, when my kids were growing up I had 3 Mirandas, different models, they loved having the same kind of camera as daddy. Daughter went to the dark side and pretty much gave up cameras, son went Canon like me and so have his kids.
