I use the Sony 400 2.8 with the 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters matched up with the A9. I have never shot with the 600, but have no problem with the 400 hand held. Furthermore, combined with the teleconverters there is very little loss in sharpness and even if you use the 2.0 you have an 800 at 5.6 and the flexibility to use the 400 in low light with no teleconverters. I would consider the 400 and the two teleconverters600 give you three lenses, a 400 2.8, 540 4.0 and 800 5.6.
I agree. I have the 400 2.8 and the converters. But I also see with the 600 very little image degradation with either of the converters. So, with the 600 you have 600 @f/4, 840 @f/5.6, and 1200 @f/8. And for some reason if you really want to pile it on, use an a7Riv w/ 61 MP and go to to the crop mode and you have more than the 1200mm (hypothetically). You know what say say, you never have enough reach for bird (wildlife) photography. 😉
