Hi,
I had a camera club competition last night. I did not do well on my images. The judge is a professional Nikon Ambassador. I believe he was scoring based on professional competitions, not camera club competitions.

Here is my image. His points were good, I need to work on lighting the subject better to reflect the lighting in the scene.

Comments welcome. :)

I think it is a fine image and for photo club I suppose it depends on the other images presented at the time. I am not a judge or expert, but would point out that the light seems to come from different directions as it falls on the two characters. In addition, they are not blended into the scenery enough in particular the feet.

I am still trying to get these thing right and it’s all a learning curve so please don't be disheartened judges can sometimes miss what you are trying to do. I have had similar experiences with them.

Direction of light and floating feet are discussed often here. The light is very bright on the figures compared to the foliage, and as EG points out, the figures are lit differently (it's obvious that one is simply a horizontal flip of the other when you examine the shadows on their clothing).

Other folks can give you more detailed tips about the feet, which include creating darker shadows underneath and blending the edges more softly and with varying opacity.

Great example for learning, Roni. Thank you!

Thanks so much for the comments. With my creative images, I have to learn more about the direction of the lighting in this kind of image.

As was pointed out already the light and floating feet. I too am guilty of that. I might add to give the images of the men a different look. You can clone out the walking stick on one of the men. In addition changing the color of their jackets and hats so they are not the same. But that would be determined by your level of performing those changes.
Good luck with the contest.

Thanks for your great suggestions. No contest, just a camera club competition.

A single image would have had more impact than the two. You would have scored higher. I am a judge for the Chicago Area Camera clubs.

I am also a judge on long island. We had a new judge and his scores were very low. We score 6.5-9. Out of over 100 images, he gave out 1 score of 9, many 6.5.

Judge is a professional Nikon ambassador, his comments were ok but his scores were very low.

What is your opinion of one image versus the two you had?

I was just playing, I liked the two images, I like the positioning of the 2, leading the viewers eye into the path ahead. i have also used him in another image.

I’m sorry to hear that. I judge photos based on how it hits me in my mind’s eye. I often can’t tell you why I like a photo, just that I like it.

My mind’s eye says it likes this. I normally don’t comment about a photo unless it really hits me and your photo hit me.

To me, the feet and walking stick look suspended in midair rather than touching the ground. Nice work, though: you are much more accomplished than I at post-processing.

Both the images you show are very strong in concept and composition and both are quite striking. The problems already mentioned can be overcome with practice but lighting isn’t easily changed, it takes a while to get there. Generally I try not to mix it too much and then only when there’s no option. It does help if you know what you want to achieve in the first place but most of us are trying to make something from our existing stock. To see someone working from start to finish with a pre-determined aim is a pleasure (have a look at Brooke Shaden working for example), but we don’t all get that opportunity.

I’m far from an expert, but I think the subjects are well lit.
