I have the Tokina 11-16 and really like it, within its limitations. I bought it for a trip to Washington DC. It is an amazing lens to use indoors (where allowed). That is where the f2.8 really comes in handy. The other place it shines is in long exposure shots of the night sky. Other than those 2 occasions, I seldom use it wide open....especially not for landscapes. The depth of field is pretty shallow wide open. Unless I am looking for a specific out of focus background effect, I prefer things to be sharp. In my opinion, stopping down and using a longer exposure on a tripod is a better way to deal with low light landscape situations.

Using an ultra wide lens for landscapes is an art all to itself. There are several good resources on line that will help you see the virtues and limitations of shooting landscapes with a lens like this. Also, if you do decide to get it, make sure that it focuses to infinity properly. There are several articles online about the known problem with this lens and how to easily correct it.

With all of that being said, my advice would be to use what you already have. But hey....it's your money.

Looking for a UHH review on this lens, Experience prefered to provide a good Review.
I am interested due to the 2.8 constant aperture, allowing plenty of light.
I presently own a Nikon 11-20mm 4.5-5.6 wide angle, for my Landscape Photography

had this lens when I was shooting with the D7000. Just get it. It's good, fairly inexpensive, and is a great match for the D7XXX series. I didn't really use it wide open, but have a lot of great photos from this lens. Got rid of it when I went full frame and sold it here on the forum for about $50 less than I had paid for it.

It has been repeated more than once here, the Tokina is a very good lens. I do not own one I am talking about the many reviews I have seen in the Web. I have also seen many images made with the lens and indeed they are superb.
I do not believe anybody needs a fast lens for landscape photography where small lens apertures are used more often than not.

If you don’t have a macro, Tokina makes a 100mm f/2.8 that is awesome.

That is verrrrrrry awesome good news.
I used to shoot my landscapes in macro range too.

My wife had a terrarium and so I could move “the world” wherever I needed it to get best light on the landscape.

I bought the Tokina 11-16 back when the D90 was new. The Tokina is a great WA for DX but you already have those focal lengths covered with your Nikon lens. I see no practical value to buying the Tokina for landscape or even architectural work.
Good luck luck selling images and/or prints. The only way I've ever made money through photography was working for studios or freelance commissioned assignments.

I don't know what the difference is, but I have the Tokina AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX Lens which, 'tho covering a slight longer range than the 11-16, is slightly less $. I have no complaints about mine.

I only use two lenses for landscape photography. The Nikon 16-35 mm f4 (90% of the time) and the Nikon 24-120 f 4 (10% of the time), I use these two because they share the same filter size.
Sounds like you are set on the Tokina, but I find a 11-16 a little two wide for most of the things I shoot. Below is an example of the 16-35. This was a photo of a water fall in a small town in Vermont, the old mill can be seen in the background.

The 16-35mm lens is for FX while the 11-16 is for DX. Both have similar fields of view.

If the OP needs a faster lens for low light get the Tokina. If not the Nikon that you have is fine. I have both the 12-24mm f/4 and 17-35mm f/4 Tokina for my FX and DX cameras and they are both fantastic lenses. Much lower distortion than Nikon's current UWA (ultra wide angle) lenses. The only thing is that the 12-24mm only works on D7000 series and DX cameras that have a focus motor (screw drive auto focus). Not a problem for me but you need to make sure if your camera has this option.

The Tokina you mention comes in two types. The older Pro lens was screw drive while the Pro II version is a built in focus motor.

Either way you look at it the Tokina's are a great deal as they are built like a tank and made to last. Night and day difference from the newer plastic lenses that die if you look at them the wrong way.

It sounds like a pretty good lens. If bought, I will be using it on my Nikon D3300, mainly for Landscape Photography, in which I hope to provide myself extra Income to assist in paying for acquiring wanted Photography equipment.

hi Silverrails, i have the same camera and Tokina's 11-20 which overlaps my 18-55 kit lens. its a good lens (11-20) i would think the 11-16 is the same. your choice. have fun.

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but I must ask, What is a UWA Lens?
I do like my Nikon 10-20mm 4.5-5.6 Lens, and I may keep it, just curious if the Tokina 11-16mm DX Pro II lens would compete or possibly surpass my Nikon lens. I presently have 5 Nikon Lens for my D3300

silverrails, wow, I too have 5 Nikon lenses : 18-55 / 55-200 / 200-500 / 35mm/ 24mm pc / and the Tokina.
